Hey guys, this past summer I finally ended up finding a 2G GSX. It was everything I was looking for an more, it was a 2 owner that stayed in the family since new, clean Carfax (as useless as carfax can be) , relatively low miles for the year (117k), full maintenance history since new, all the manuals, spare keys, even the brochure for the 1998 Eclipse from the dealer. It was also completely 100% stock, a 5 speed manual and it was a 1997-99, which were the main things I was looking for in a GSX. The car has spent its whole life in New England, starting its life in New Hampshire, then heading to Massachusetts and now it's down in Rhode Island.

The only major issue with the car is some rust and rot on the rocker panels. The previous owner had patched it in the past but I would rather get new rocker panels installed and just completely fix the issue. I am just trying to see of where I should go from here. As far as where to get the rocker panels from, I can get them from Mitsubishi for $515.86 for the left panel and $437.90 for the right panel. I haven't looked too far into where else I could get the panels from figuring get them from the dealer would be the best but also the more expensive option. I am also trying to figure out where would be the best shop to get this kind of work done. The car isn't my daily driver and I have no plans to drive it during this winter, so I figure now would be the time to get it fixed. The final thing I am trying to do it get an idea of what this kind of work will end up running me, I'm figuring at least $2,000.00.

If any of you could point in the right direction for any of the things I am wondering, It would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

no he's talking about the actual steel rocker panels behind the skirts. I had the same thing, rusted out panels and decided to break up the rot, rust convert, then fiberglass was alot cheaper. But I looked at replacing them and you just need to find a shop that does welding, it looked pretty straightforward when I looked into it, maybe a couple hundred per panel to cut/weld. Stangmurdera on here who's always doing part outs can get you used rockers cheaper

Thanks for the replies guys, so you're thinking that buying used rockers would be a better option. How much would a set of them run me used ? I couldn't find anyone selling them so just a general price would be helpful, and would the money saved by buying used be worth it? Once again any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm dealing with this issue and them some as well. Im not bad with a metal lathe and a welder so im really debating on just custom fabricating my own panels and being done with it. But I may run into issues that way. Are there any local junkyards in your area that maybe you could pull them from or maybe Miller has what you need.?

If you aren't doing the work yourself, just go ahead and buy the new ones from Mitsubishi. Used ones would need about a billion spot welds drilled out before you can fit them to your chassis, so you may as well be paying someone to do the job twice.

ill most likely be going to a body shop for this, so i guess new ones it is. colt4g63 do you have a link for them?

So I'm just going to go with new rocker panels since that seems like the best idea and the general consensus here. Now I just need to find a good shop to do the work at. Do you guys know of any shops that you would bring your own cars to in the Southern New England area. If the shop was in Rhode Island or Southern Massachusetts that would be even better, but I would be willing to travel if need be. Also if anyone could give me a bit more specific of the cost other than a couple hundred per panel, I know this is something that will change from shop to shop but would still be nice to have a bit of an idea. Once again, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
