i am hearing a tink tink tink noise when starting under load in my 93 tsi awd auto. I looked under the car and the u joints dont seem to be bad but when I tap the shaft its definitely the noise I am hearing. Nothing like exhaust is interfering with it... Is it posibble its just the carrier bearing being worn out? I know with out being under the car its hard to tell, but i dont want to throw more money than I need to at it. Rebuild kit is $340ish and a whole new shaft assembly is about $500...

you need to wiggle both the DS and the exhaust at the same time. Normally there is a "thump" when a carrier bearing is going out, the sound you indicated is something hitting it

You also need to physically check the U-joints. Just looking won't tell you anything. Put it in nutral and with the ebrake on crawly underneath and grab the drive shaft. The oem U-joints don't have a grease fitting and can dry out and become really notchy. Also look for rips in the carrier bearing. If there are any it will allow the shaft to move a lot more, and possible make noise. Drive slow and stick your head out the window. Listen to where the sound is coming from so it gives you an idea where to look.

I did this and its definitely drive shaft area.. im now also sometimes gettting shudder at initial movement forward and occasionally when coming to a stop.. seems to be getting worse...

Going to be this weekend before that happens... i cant imagine it would be anything but the drive shaft... unless the trans is starting to go but it doesnt seem to be

Get the car on jack stands, and inspect the u joints. If there is any rotational play in them they are bad. You don't need a press to change them. I have a press and I usually use a c-clamp the change the u joints.

This is something that needs fixed. The last thing you want is a broken u joint followed by the driveshaft at least ruining the mounting points for the carrier bearings, and worst case meeting you in the cabin of the car.

This is what it sounds like when you have bad carrier bearings. Both mine was bad. I could wiggle the shaft about 2-3 inches each way. It was horrible.

DSM rattling noise.
