Hi everybody!
Last night (4:30 this morning, actually) was it! The car took it's first breath - But only after a lot of googling/searching/cursing etc.
Ran a couple last minute vacuum lines and wired in the boost gauge and wideband... then we went for the crank.
Cranking, cranking, cranking... we weren't getting any life. A quick diag revealed that not a drop of fuel was making it to the fuel rail. When the car was on and/or and cranking, the fuel pump (new walbro 255) wasn't making a sound.
I've read that the fuel pump won't turn on when the key is on the ON position. We took the voltage off the pump with the key at 'on' and we did get a reading. (Sorry I don't remember what it was - when it comes to electricity my brain stops comprehending).
I was searching all over and determined the fuel pressure relay is in the center console by the ecu, but thats all I could determine. I was reading things about pinouts of the ecu, about some relay boxes back there... all the photos I could find were from a 2g and didn't look like what I had in there.
From there, We put 12 volts to the fuel pump tester in the bay - worked beautifully. We actually drained the old fuel till we got the good stuff coming through.
So the pump had voltage at 'on', and it was functioning. It just wasn't kicking on when it needed to. Long story short, we did a DIY rewire (with a new relay) to a switch for the pump. After some trial and error, we made it work and were able to start the car. But the fuel pump is on all the time.
Through this build I've picked up on a lot of little things the previous owner did like deleting egr, deleting ac, little mods here and there... Apparently he touched the fuel pump and fudged up the wiring.
Because I'm completely lost as to what's wrong with the wiring, I'm thinking I should just get a new fuel pump assembly (with unhacked wiring?) and swap them. Also find, test, and likely replace the fuel relay.
If a fuel pump rewire is done, doesn't that eliminate the need for the stock fuel pressure relay? From what I understand, Something is not telling the relay we put in when to turn the pump on and off.
Any light that can be shed on this would be immensely appreciated. My mechanic is looking to me for answers, but if I knew anything about the wiring I would've just done it myself. It's so hard to communicate what I don't comprehend and I'm just making the situation worse.
Please pardon the ignorance on my part. It seems like the more I read the more I'm confusing myself.
The good news is that once the car started, it seemed to be sound. Power steering pump is leaking a bit (as can be expected from a grimey, old ps pump) and somewhere in there, we somehow forgot cam seals. Hopefully that's our only leak.
