All "my car won't start" discussion threads are merged HERE. We've basically made it easier for those who insist upon not searching by grouping together all threads from those with similar issues so you can just scroll through and see some possible solutions. To search for info within this thread, use the "Search This Thread" feature in the black bar about 3" above what you're reading right now.

Could be anything from a loose battery terminal to internal engine damage, and literally everything in between which may involve the electrical, fuel, and ignition system...possibly even something that you screwed up while working on the car yourself. While it's unlikely we're going to diagnose and solve your problem over the internet, feel free to discuss any possible solutions.

I live in Canada and right now its not very warm out, about -30c
my car does not have a block heater too keep it warm.

I tryed to start my car this morning and it wouldent start, ive had this problem before but this time, the car doesnt crank at all it just makes a sound that sounds like an electric drill.

Whats wrong.

Thanks

I would remove the starter and take it to autozone and have them do a load test on it and see if the starter itself engages. Check your leads on the starter itself to make sure there's no play maybe something came loose. I had the same issue a few weeks back no crank but push started fine. Turned out my pos battery cable was corroded. Cleaned everything up and double checked it and started right up

Just recently, I had my starter and alternator tested at Advance Auto. Alternator good, starter bad. Had it checked at AutoZone as well for a 2nd opinion, alternator bad, starter good. Consensus: don't trust them.

I've already replaced the starter and cranked it with a wire from the starter to the battery. My friend had to hold the key on start position for it to crank over. I dunno it seems like it's something else rather than it be the actual pos cable. Was doing more research with every other No Crank No Start posts., but a lot of those didn't really help. I've tried a lot. I checked for corrosion on the wire and cleaned ALL contacts. Maybe the signal wire on the top of the solenoid is a problem?

Wouldn't that more likely explain the clicking from the Starter Relay?

Having a no start issue.. I've already had the battery tested and it passed. Removed the starter and had it tested and it was bad so I replaced it but it still will not start. I can hear a clicking inside the cabin when I try and start so next I wish to test the starter relay. I've searched and can't find exactly how to do this though so looking for some help on how to test the starter relay using a multimeter. Thanks for the help,

-Corey

edit: also I have the clutch safety switch unplugged.

I second what he said takes just a little bit of corrosion and you will get no start. As for checking the starter relay can't you just switch it with another relay in the fuse box and see what happens?

Yes. It's the quickest easiest way. I'm sure someone will tell me I'm wrong and it's the wrong way but for a quick simple test yes it works.

technically this is the correct way...

First try removing the relay and jumper the black-yellow to the black-red. This bypasses the starter relay so the starter solenoid will always get power when key is turned to Start. If this works your problem is either the relay itself, clutch pedal down position switch, or factory theft alarm. However if you don't care about the clutch pedal having to be pressed or theft alarm disabling the starter, you can just leave the jumper in (although I'd recommend soldering it).

[Normal starter relay operation on DSM cars: When key is turned to Start, the starter relay is normally closed (provides power to solenoid) but opens (no power to solenoid) if the clutch pedal is not pressed or stock theft alarm goes off.]

So.. I've tested the relay in two methods mentioned above. The first was luv2rallye's method in connecting the black-yellow to black-red and trying to start.. it did not. I already had the relay removed so I used a multi-meter to test it. Measured the resistance and both sets of prongs had continuity. I then applied 12V to one set of prongs and could hear the audible click. Then with 12V applied to the first set I measured resistance across the other and got infinite resistance. This coincides with luv2rallye's description of DSM starter relay operation so I'm concluding the relay is fine but I am still not getting any crank. So far I've had the battery checked, grounds and battery terminal connections are fine, new starter was just put in, and now the relay is ruled out. Any Ideas on where to go next? Only Idea I have is checking the ignition switch otherwise I have no idea what else would cause a no crank.

Thanks,
Corey

Could be the ignition switch. Did you hook the ground back up when you changed the starter?

Only other thing I could think of I was plaqued by random no starts in my truck for months and couldn't figure it out. Turned out I peeled back some of the rubber on the positive cable and it was green. Even though the end on the battery I cleaned up. I took it off and let it soak in water and baking soda for like half hour and haven't had a problem since! I hope this helps.

Try touching +12v to the starter relay's black-yellow wire - starter should operate. If it does then you have either 1) a bad ignition switch or 2) bad wiring somewhere from the starter relay, through the ignition switch, through the 30 amp "IGN SW" fuse (engine fusebox), to the battery.

Make sure ALL the fuses in the engine bay are good. Test them, don't do a visual. The 80 amp is a good place to start.

So my car that has been nearly perfect for a while now has hit it's first problem. This morning my car started perfect when I went to the gym. Started perfect when I left the gym. And about 5 hours later (about a half hour ago) I go to start my car and it wouldn't. When I turn the key it makes a single "tick" noise. And if I hold the key longer then 2-3 seconds it makes like a high pitched type electrical noise I think. I really don't know how to explain it. It's just weird how it was perfect this morning. Any ideas guys? Starter maybe?? If my explanation isn't very clear I will make a video later so you guys can hear it for yourself.

try jumping the battery if no luck most likey your starter

Sorry I forgot to add that in the post! I tried jumping it and it did nothing. Can a starter jar die like that? I had no signs of it. And what about this noise? If I had to explain the sound it's like a high pitched "errrrrrrrrr" LOL. I'm gonna make a vid when I get home in a couple hours.
