Egr valve, block off? Or replace?

so I tested my egr valve because I was having a bit of a rough idle and it failed the vacuum test, and while looking on how to test it I stumbled on quite a few articles about building a block off plate, there seems to be quite a few mixed views on this though,

So I was wondering, should I build a block off plate (which would help carbon buildup and I would no longer have to worry about a dis functional egr valve)
Or should I just buy and replace it with a new egr valve?

If I decide to go with the block off plate are there any good how to articles? 2G 1995 eclipse GS

STM sells a block off plate but I have done a aluminum can "plate" the same size as a gasket and reinstalled the egr valve if money is an issue. Not to be cheap but it works on my DD Saturn. :)

Well I'm planning on doing it because I have a rough idle, I've checked everything except my purge solenoids but my egr valve failed the test, and I heard alot of people saying the 1.8 l 1g had a plate stock so I got one for free from my local junkyard just to find out it does not fit 2g (but hey it was free) and I was kind of thinking of using the soda can but I heard rumors from other forums that it supposedly burns through after awhile. How long have you had that thin piece of aluminum there? Nonetheless, would I have to do it to both sides of the egr valve or just the side that connects to the engine MORE INFO: VA foes not have emission checks so I'm not worried about emissions[DOUBLEPOST=1416583470][/DOUBLEPOST]And also if I block it off what do I do will all the vacuum lines and electrical plug that plugs into the condenser I think it was called(black piece with like 3 lines and an electrical plug ) I think I read that you just remove the lines and use a plug but what about the black plastic thing and the plug?

I think I have a set of block off plates from my old 420a in my toolbox, I can check when I'm at the garage tonight.

I forget what needs to be done with the electricals to prevent a CEL...I'll leave that searching up to you. But another thing you might want to check on your car is for the Secondary Air System. This was on 95 420a's and was recalled because it was just a terrible idea. It's pretty easy to delete if it hasn't been done already, I know there are several write-ups on here.

Thanks for the heads up, googled about the secondary air system for 95's and I think its already been removed, the post said it connects to the stock air box and the downpipe, nothing abnormal on my box and only the o2 sensor on the down pipe

Well if your intent on blocking it off go to home depot or what not and grab a sheet of steel. They had some pretty thick pieces for cheap enough, plus you could do several out of one piece. But keep in mind this delete will effect your fuel economy. Maybe not a ridiculous amount but it will.

alright so i found a few different forums on how to block it off and i think i did it right but i want to make sure, i put the soda can (this is temporry i plan on buying one already made) in between the valve and the block, i put two covers over both nipples of the valve and then i found a way on the forums so i wont get a CEL where its plugged in, but no vacuum is applied and it idles at about 1K rpms but it is steady. does that sound correct?

I had the same issue, my idle was rough and the only thing I had not replaced was the egr. So I deleted the evap and egr systems on my 98 GST. I bought a rubber cap kit from ebay for 5$ and I installed a block off plate with rtm as a gasket.
I have never got a code from doing this and my idle is smooth.

For 1G's : some states when you get sniffed, only look for CO and HC - not NOX... in which the EGR valve does is reduce the Oxides of Nitrogen with inserting exhaust gasses in the intake stream to cool down the flame.

Thus, I made a thin blockoff plate out of metal from a tin can lid to block gasses, but kept the EGR valve installed and fully connected so the sniff czars can see no modification or removed devices.

For the HC; It's the EGR that keeps the HC count up where as a blockoff plate can help reduce HC .. and getting a catch can helps also in reducing HC numbers.

So I decided to go ahead and make my own plate, I got a price of sheet medal cut it all out, and the side that connects is very smooth, hooked it all up with sealant and I slightly smell gas? Is it not sealed right?

Maybe, if you can't tighten it up any without breaking a bolt then you may wanna consider stm's block off plate. It's cut true so it is gonna have a better seal. If that's actually the problem you might wanna check for a fuel leak, my 92 sprung a leak from rusting out the feed line.

tightened it a bit and was still smelling it, but I drove it a few miles and I guess I just had something inside my exhaust or something because I don't smell it anymore.

thanks for the help everyone!

I did the pop can method. I never had idle problems but wanted to delete as much as i can off this car. Since blocking egr and deleting emissions i haven't had a single idle problem or anything else for that matter. Only thing is i have a permanent cel light on but that doesn't bother me.

I don't know what year or style car you have, but for 2g eclipses look at picture #2 (I think) that I posted above, it takes care of the CEL , another way others are doing is using a resistor on that plug (just looks cleaner)

I have a 2g but the cel doesn't bother me one bit. Thanks. It reminds me of all the sh*tty cars I've had in the past with cel on haha.

I don't like having the CEL on because it's a warning light, if it was on and something else happened I wouldn't know about it.

But also some codes will cause the engine to run in safe mode were it bogs down the engine to prevent damage, now I don't know if the EGR code would cause safe mode but better safe than sorry

No it doesnt affect my car one bit. If my car ever starts acting up ill just read the codes but for right now its ok.

My soda can trick was temporary and it will burn through at some time but I doubled it and reinstalled the EGR valve so it looks stock. Just fyi. This was on my DD Saturn Sc2 but same applies.
