I have a 98 eclipse gsx 5 speed built day is march 1988 and the body has about 132k miles. The motor had some work done to the top end this is what is done to it :
Brian crower 272 cams
BC valve springs
Supertech valves
Top line lifters
New oem head gasket
Arp head studs
Adjustable cam gears
Arp cam bolts
New ngk plugs and wires
New slave cylinder
New front axles
STM intake adapter and filter
STM EGR delete
STM balance shaft eliminator kit
Also has a SRS full exhaust with no cat.
Has stock turbo, injectors, tubular manifold and side mount. Will be looking into getting those upgraded soon.
Top end has about 150 miles on it. Bottom end needs rebuilding. Goal for right now is 400hp on the 7bolt motor will maybe in the future go up to 600hp but if not 500. My gsx is a dd so not looking to build it for the track. Might see the track once or twice.
So the shop I took my 98 gsx to told me before I took it in that it will cost $1500-$1600 to build/rebuild it. Now im being told that i need a crank and stay oem but then go with wiseco piston hd 1400, eagle h-beam rods and acl race rods. That was what i wanted them to do in the first place. Now they told me today that with all that and machine work and taking out and put the motor in plus labor it will cost around $3000. What I don't get is how did the mild build go from $1500 to around $3000. I know that with out the car in front of them they couldn't really give me an exact price so that could be why but how could they tell me a mild build will cost $1500 then jump to $3000. I know I have to talk to the shop but im asking here in case they are trying to cheat me out on money. So what you guys think it should all cost? I brought them a big front mount, a 52/52 precision turbo, pte 780 injectors, wally 255,evo 3 ported mani, evo 8 maf and a greddy bov. I brought them it so they could make sure those stuff are fine and I could use them. So I told them ill put them on my self. So I just need help figuring out how much a shop should charge and what could they be doing for $3000. Thanks for the help in advance.

The shop I'm using to swap engines is charging me about $1500. That's just to swap out engines and nothing more. Most shops bill out between $60 to $100/ hour, depending on who they are and what kind of shop.

For just a rebuild, I'd say that's a little high. However, throwing in more work, replacing parts, etc can jump the price quickly. They will charge you (with profit) for parts and just one extra hour can cost $150. Prices also vary based on location. Still, I'd call a couple of different shops and compare prices.

I'm taking it to r&d in Illinois and they told me before i took it $1500-$2000 for a mild build and i called boostin performance in Illinois which every one knows that place and they told me $3000-$3500 for the same build so why would i not go to the best shop and go to the shop its at now for the same price. Even though the place i took it to is one of the best places next to boostin why wouldn't i go to boostin for the same price. I just thought that the r&d was cheaper and at first the gave me a way better price so idk what is going on with the price change

Either they underestimated before seeing the car, or they decided to try for more money. I haven't got a lot of faith in people these days, so I'd expect the latter.

Up there where you are, I don't know what shops normally charge. I'm way down south in Mississippi. I would say to go with the shop you know does the best work, if the price is comparable. Considering that I'm paying $2700 for a remanufactured engine, I'd say that $3000 isn't too high.

I may be wrong but I cant imagine a shop rebuilding a motor with performance parts like you listed for only $1500 when pistons, rods and bearings will cost you close to $1000 and that doesn't include any machine work that needs done to the block or crank plus gaskets seals... Then your asking them to pull the motor out of the car and put it back is going to cost a lot in labor. I would say $3000 is cheap once you add all of that in.

But what i dont get why did the say $1500 at first. Now next question is what is the best way to get 400hp out of my gsx? Like what should i have done to my bottom end since my top end is built. Is there any way not to go cheap with parts but then stay around $1500 or do like they said at first. Mind you i asked for a mild build since im only looking for 400hp right now since its my dd[DOUBLEPOST=1416205589][/DOUBLEPOST]plus crank i can get anywhere from $100-$150 clean

Maybe the guy misunderstood on what you all wanted. For a STOCK rebuild, $1500 sounds realistic as I was going to have one done last year and that's the ball park I got from a local engine builder.

Like the other guys are saying. After market rods and piston alone will cost you $1200 easily.

Have the guy sit down with you and show you what your money will be spent on.
