So I've been in a long, dragged out process of rebuilding the engine in my 1G and came to a halt more than a year ago after getting fed up with some BS, but I decided to get back to it, and guess what? More BS.

After having to get the block machined from .020 to .030, I obviously needed to get the pistons replaced. Unfortunately it's not so straightforward because the previous owned installed 2G pistons, so the small end of the rods were bored out to accommodate the bigger wrist pins, but because I wanted to avoid having to tune it right off the bat, I wanted to go back to 1G pistons. I decided to let the machine shop order some NPR pistons and install them on the rods, but I did mention the larger bore and that it was for a turbo. They did indeed give me 1G pistons (and ended up having to bore them out to accept bigger wrist pins) but they were non-turbo pistons. I knew they weren't but they insisted they were. Long story short, I cut my losses and just decided to never deal with them again.

Fast forward to several days ago, I decided to finally finish this damn car. From my previous piston experience, someone on this forum gave me a valuable tip: 93-94 pistons have the 22mm wrist pins as they went on the 2G rods and 7 bolt crank, but they maintained the 7.8:1 CR from before, so that's what I ordered via eBay.

Anyway, I get the box today, and the sticker on the side says "Mitsubishi 95-99". Can't say I was thrilled. I contacted the seller via e-mail and all he said was that they're interchangeable and "Actually, I just looked them up and the piston with the 3.0mm oil ring IS for the 93-94." The top of the pistons say 63DTF1 (which a google search seems to indicate are 2G pistons). Is there any truth to his claim that they can be identified by the oil ring thickness or any other means? I'm so sick of being lied to trying to buy parts. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Mark

If all other means of I.d. fail you can manually calculate the true compression ratio.

The last thing I'd want to do is put it all together for testing just to find out it's wrong.

At any rate, the rings that I received are for the 95-99 pistons according to NPR's catalog. I notified the seller again, and hopefully they won't yank me around. Luckily eBay has buyer-oriented protection.
