I recently deciding to start pulling my engine for a small checkup and overhaul. There is a loud ticking noise coming from the timing belt area it's not coming from anything internal. I noticed the timing belt cover was rubbed through in several places, so I figured the belts and pulleys were making the noise. I bought and replaced the cover still to have no luck getting rid of the sound. So any insight on this would but helpful. I have a OEM timing belt kit, waterpump, and balance shaft eliminate kit so I hope that will fix it.

Now to get on with the pulling the engine question. I have everything (I think) undone that needs to be, I've never pulled an engine before but it seems a little more tricky in a FWD then it would a RWD. Mainly because of the axles what are the steps to removing them? Another thing I haven't removed any of the Power steering lines or AC components, what is the minimum I need to remove on the belt side to pull the engine. Also any insight on tricky vacuum lines and electrical wires that I may of missed that need to be undone before I lift and break something would be nice.
 
I pulled mine from the front. My 6G72(Stealth TT) engine/transmission came out & went in almost easier than my 2g Eclipse engine.

I would probably be using a load leveler from the side to keep the weight balanced, but I am sure it can be done a few ways.

Nice... I guess I need to start working on more FWD cars.
Hopefully you can get the axle out with the engine.

It is stuff like this that keeps my projects from ever being done close to within my timeline.

Plus ordering parts seems to be like ordering from the moon. Josh
 
I feel you.. First my clutch started slipping then my turbo comes apart while driving and now it has a ticking noise at the timing belt area so I figured after 202k miles the engine is finally ready to be pulled. I just hope my engine lift will go up far enough. I may have to put the jack under the car and lower it down as I lift the engine up.
 
Moment of truth. Has anyone ever tried pulling the engine from the side? I feel like I'll give it a shot if not I'll have to attach the rotor back to the control arm and strut knuckle on both sides open the wall behind the car then I can push it into the other side of the garage and have room to do it from the front.

The only problem I can see with doing it the way you're doing it is that there's no easy way to adjust the angle of the engine with it that way. With these cars, an adjustable leveler helps out a ton with the job. Unless you have an easy way to mess with it with those straps that i'm not seeing.

Another way you can do it that works less well is to use chains and then you can hook into different links on each chain to vary the balance of the engine. With that you will need a jack under it to support the engine when you want to remove a link.
 
I did end up picking up a chain because the rope would stretch and I couldn't lift the engine up enough. Thanks for the suggestions engine is now out.

A while back my turbo came apart while in a pretty hard launch to much boost I guess LOL. You can see where the nut jumped around in there.

[DOUBLEPOST=1410662245][/DOUBLEPOST]Stock clutch wasn't holding up so good, no clue if it's been replaced before. On the back of the clutch some of the lines aren't even there and nearly wore down to the rivets.

I have the intake manifold removed also. It has a nasty looking layer of oil build up and trash I'm surprised the car didn't hit fuel cut much sooner then 6k rpm or even ran at all. I'll post pictures of it up later.[DOUBLEPOST=1410707395][/DOUBLEPOST]What's a good cleaner that I can use to clean my whole engine with? I'm talking every inch inside and out. I used some brake parts cleaner on my intake manifold but I used a whole can and barely got it clean.[DOUBLEPOST=1410727735][/DOUBLEPOST]Head is no removed as well. The exhaust valves are charred white and look flaky. Found some more metal shavings in the oil pan my guess it's crank and rod bearings. I'll post pictures of all of that later. I also found a 91 talon tsi about 1 mile up the road from me for sale. The guy will take $1200 for it. It stopped running due to overheating. Body looks good getting a closer look tomorrow of the interior. Thinking about picking it up and swapping my engine over and I'll officially be AWD!

Indeed. More pics! How'd the axle go? If it's not already out you might need to pry it out, there is a circlip. Alternatively, some have better luck with a chisel and mallet or twisting a screwdriver between the opening.
