Every time I start my car "98 GST 5 speed" I get this noise, to me it sounds like the starter is sticking, check out the video, share what you think! Thank you!

Little bit of starter hang up, kinda hard to tell. But I thought it sounded like the drive is slow at retracting. If so take it out and clean and lube it. But if the spring is weak I think you have to replace the whole starter! They used to sell bendix springs but no-one does now. Might be able to get a new one from mitsu? Aftermarket never seems as good, but napa isn't too bad. Also sounds like it's kinda hard to start. Have you changed fuel filter, tune up maintainance stuff? There is always something popping up on older cars LOL.

That's what I was thinking, I will take it apart and lube it up see if that helps, it's probably just corroded inside from wonderful Indiana Salty Winters! I will check out those springs, if they are as hard to find as it sounds, might just replace the whole starter and keep this around as an Oh sh*t spare.

Everything maintenance wise is done currently. I do have a code for the fuel pressure solenoid "one that you tap into on the left for boost gauge"
but everyone says it's purpose is just adding fuel on warm/cold starts, so that could be the hard to start your hearing, she always fires up after first crank, my last DSM fired up before the crank finished, so I know exactly what you are talking about :) Nice eye!

Replacing that bendix might be a pita! And it looks like most that are still in production are coming out of china :(
Looks like I should keep my eye out in the classifieds :)

Appreciate your feedback mercaholik!

I have the same issue in my 95 talon but it only happens on cold starts occasionally. This starter looks to have been replaced maybe its an aftermarket issue. Im probably not going to do anything about it til it gets worse or breaks. But, let me know what you find out!

No problem bud, I hate trying to internet diagnose a issue cause I'm used to being able to do certain things in person. I've tested used starters at az and watched the drive pinion kind of stick when it is supposed to retract smoothly. But it would technically pass a test, but was still the issue.

The metal on metal noise just makes me cringe as I know it's eating at the fly wheel every time I start the car, glad to know it's a known problem and not one of those "rare beat my head with a hammer" type issue!
I guess the nice thing about a manual car besides being a anger management tool :D is I'll be able to start the car if the starter does crap out!
The metal/metal noise has to go though, I got the lube :D

Yea and I pull the starter out the top, it's easy access from passenger side with the battery out.

I'll be doing this sometime this weekend I hope! Hit a manhole lid which destroyed my rim and some suspension components on the passenger front, so now i Have a bunch of suspension parts I get to replace in that area, might put the girlfriend to work cleaning the starter while I replace bent parts. If it isn't one thing, it's another :) Story of my life !!

WHAT HAPPEND! like the cover was off and it ate your tire? is the insurence company paying to fix it?

I have no clue, I've not replaced that part yet, I'm assuming it's stock! Car has 103k miles. None of the bolts look like they had been taken out.
When I replace the clutch I will find out, but the clutch is still in nice shape![DOUBLEPOST=1414623333][/DOUBLEPOST]

I'll be making a thread on that here shortly with pictures, that way i can get yall's :2cents:

i have the same noise in my car . its bin there for awhile but the car always starts . i was going to change the starter but keep putting it off. let us know how you make out cause i have an aluminum flywheel but don,t think that is causing the problem.

I will for sure post back with some results! Going to try cleaning and lubing it up while inspecting the fly wheel, maybe I can see if it's the stock or aftermarket one!

It's free to have the starter tested at az and you can actually watch the drive gear extend and how easily it retracts. Sometimes it will just hang up for a second, but that is enough in the real world to get in the way of the now moving faster flywheel. Be prepared to replace the starter or spring though cause you got luck like me:ohdamn:!

Yep if it wasn't for bad luck, i wouldn't have luck :D
I'm prepared to replace it, and I didn't know auto zone tested starters, that's sweet!
