Dumb question. Are you suppose to be able to here your transfer case working at all? The reason I ask is because the last time I drove this car was 3 years ago. Yes, fluids have been changed

No not at all. I changed the fluid yesterday and on the drain plug has a magnet built into it. There where metal shavings and sludge packed in the tip of it. I would like to rebuild it in the near future. I just wanted to make sure the noise is normal. Only does it when I take off from a stop.

Well I wouldn't call it normal, but it seems to be common. But it's from a low fluid condition usually the infamous drive shaft yoke/ seal leak. Mine started to make a slight whine on decel after only a leaking what I thought wasn't much. But be careful cause it can lock up on you.

Some oil sludge is normal, metal shavings are not. Bearings could be going bad, so be careful. Although not sure why that would happen if you didn't lose any oil. Xcase is recommend to take 1/2 quart. Is that how much came out when you drained it?

Also balance shafts not being lined up properly can make whining noises. My car did that when I bought it and the stub shaft actually fell off of the oil pump gear and destroyed the engine.
I've removed my balance shafts when I did my rebuild.[DOUBLEPOST=1414327614][/DOUBLEPOST]

Little came out because most of it leaked out when I pulled it off the car during my rebuild. I plan on rebuilding it real soon. Any special tools need to remove the assembly out from it? Or advice on the rebuild? Surprisingly, there isn't much info on this on the forms.

I just replaced my xcase with a used one from eBay. I lucked out and just replaced the seals. So far so good. I couldn't find any decent info on quality rebuild instructions. If it's in your budget, Jack's transmissions will rebuild your old one for around $600.

I'm trying to save what I can. With me being in college I'm broke most of the time.LOL
