So on my way to work today it was a cold early morning the car was doing just fine for the first 20 something miles then out of no where it dies and wont run. while i tried to find a turn out i was able to keep it moving in second gear but then a loud pop and red hot embers shot out of my exhaust followed by a ton of smoke. right now i have a 2.5" exhaust with a cat on it so i didn't think any embers of a sort would make it out.. But what would be the cause? i made it to my station and the car seemed to run fine after i pulled over and let it sit for a few minutes, it drove fine the next 8 or so miles. I'm just worried about making it back home tonight any help would be great. i don't notice anything out of the ordinary timing belt is intact and is tight nothing looks wrong. thank you.

Ceramic catalytic converters do that. If your pushing too much heat it melts and explodes I believe. Wait for someone else to confirm my knowledge.

Confirmed. Just had a 96 blow all the packing out of a 3" cat back car would boost but was sluggish on the way home the other night. To dark to look at it so I called it a night. Next morning neighbor text me saying someone stuck a wig in the muffle over night LOL. Went out and fiberglass was streached out 3 foot in the driveway. Cats run around hot to begin with. Add boost and lean fuel trims they will melt down I would pull the exhaust down and check for busted honeycomb and restrictions too much back pressure with kill a motor[DOUBLEPOST=1414094815][/DOUBLEPOST]Also check for underlying causes if confirmed if u r running to rich afr u might be dumping raw fuel in to the cat. Get it hot enuff and u have a bomb waiting to go boom great mitsubishi tech once told me cats don't die. They are murdered and this is true cats have no moving parts to break. It is a chemical reaction between the platinum and exhaust gasses to take harmful fumes and convert them to nitrogen carbon dioxide and h2o. if the engine management or a part like a leaking or stuck open injector or a misfire is up stream from the cat. It will kill the cat hope this help diagnose the issue
