New to the site, been reading for the past couple months and learning. I bought my 97 gen 2 a couple months ago. I didn't how serious the strut tower rust was when I bought it, but I'm starting to learn. I would like to hear some opinions and what I'm in for if I want to repair. Other than the strut tower rust the car is in great shape inside and out . 120k miles. Nearly completely stock, excepting sequential blow off valve. I do want to start building power but I'm currently working on the engine to stop a lower end oil leak, water lump, and timing belt.

Please take a look at the strut tower rust and give me you're opinions on moving forward. Thanks

Holy sh*t that rust is bad!!! Forget everything else, this is your #1 priority! You're new baby will be a dead baby if your flying down the highway, hit a pothole and your strut shoots through the roof. The rust needs to be grinded out, top and bottom, to bare metal, and new metal welded in. Its only gonna get worse, and quickly. If you know someone, the job is relatively easy, and if you do the prep work even a body shop shouldn't charge more than a couple bills. How's the rear wheel well rust?

Ok, now looking at buying a wire welder or using a friends. Gonna be starting this week, after I change the slave cylinder.

I cant believe how bad that is please cut and weld asap that's a nice looking 2g to let die from that cancer

There is some rust in rear wells, not sure on the strut towers. I'll have to give it a thorough inspection.

It is savable, I did one that had rust on the drivers side that like that & half of the motor mount pocket. It was really gone...

You can either cut & clean what you have. Then fabricate patch pieces & weld in new metal.
Or get new towers from miller imports or the like & weld them in complete. ^ this one can get involved depending upon how much of the tower you replace.

The motor mount rotted one was an engine pull/front clip removal.
The complete tower was replaced firewall to frame rail to core support.

+1 on talking to Stevie at Miller import parts.

I would also recommend getting a copper weld thru primer to help protect the inner part of the strut tower when you weld the new pieces in. Moisture gets trapped between the panels and thats why they rust so bad.

I have a question with those familiar with welding. I'm looking into getting a wire feed welder to do the job. Has anyone here done there welds with flux core? Or have y'all stuck with using the gas with your wire welders. I ask because its is much cheaper setup to stick with the flux core, but I have read its messier with a burns and such.
