New forum member here, Just joined to help my neighbor who is working on a plymoth laser tubo. In the middle of rebuilding a 2g engine for it, however the 1g timing belt cover from the 6 bolt is not going to work on 97 GSX engine we have been building. I would have posted this in the classifieds but apparantly you cant as a new member. I am looking for suggestions on how to mod the 1g cover we have or someone willing to sell me a 2g 7 bolt timing belt cover.

Thanks
Matt

You'll need the 2g cover, they're not interchangeable in any way. Also have you realized that the 6 bolt front/rear mounts wont work? Also, the 2g is meant to use a mount bolted to the transmission, whereas the 1g isnt. Not sure if you knew about any of that but thought i'd point it out.

Agree with above, please save yourself a LOT of headache and source the proper block for the vehicle.

I am a 3s guy myself, he just is not very computer savy so i was hunting the parts for him. I am the first to tell you i am clueless when it comes to the true DSM cars. he has made custom mounts allready just got held up by the timing belt cover.

The dsm isn't like an m3 or an nsx, when it's cool to put the 3.2L engine in an older car that only had the 3.0L. The 6 bolt block that the car CAME WITH is the better block choice.

He bought the car and the 6 bolt in it took a crap so he came across a 7 bolt that was needing bearings, he rebuilt the 7 bolt as cheap as he could so that he could place that into the car to drive it while slowley rebuilds the 6 bolt with performance parts. I was meerly asking if anyone has modded a 1g timing cover to fit the 2g motor and if so any suggestions, or was looking to purchase one. I wasnt asking if the swap could be done, We fully understand that the 6 bolt is considered the better engine and eventually the car will go back to that he just wanted to have something in the car to drive it while we play with the 6 bolt. Finding a 6 bolt locally that people dont want an arm and leg for in this area is not easy! He picked up te 7 bolt for less than 100.00

The machine shop I'm using said he can get turbo 6 bolt cores for $75-100 from a "core yard". If you have a local machine shop, they may also have access to the same thing in your area.

Trust me, this surprised the crap out of me when he said that, but I believe him, because he is the shop that works on a 6 bolt in a corolla that's running locally at Atco doing 180mph in the 1/4.

I understand you guys now have time invested in the 7bolt block, but it'll be just so much less of a headache sticking with a 6 bolt.

:) I just want to get this project done so i can get the 92 stealth tt into his garage so i can pull my engine and put in my stroker kit.

as mentioned you will need the 7 bolt cover. i had to butcher a brand new 6 bolt cover to get the clearances i needed

As stated, you will have to trim the over around the water pump and oil filter housing. Do you mind showing a picture of these fabricated engine mounts. It seems kind of odd that you are in the middle of rebuilding it, yet you already have mounts made for it. It also seems kind of odd that you were able to fabricate motor mounts for this, but you are aren't able to figure out the timing cover. There aren't even any holes on the 2g block to bolt a motor mount on for the front.

I agree with just using the 6 bolt. I understand you want something in the car now put that's a real pita putting it inand all the custom fab work to just pull it out again and then have to put the 6 bolt back in again. II'd save the time and money and just sell the 7 bolt while finishing the 6bolt. You'll be happier with the results and the 6 bolt is a better motor.
