Hi guys, People were wanting to see my build progress so far, so here are a couple pics. 1990 6 bolt 4g63 with 91 harness in a 1974 super beetle. Haven't worked on it in a while but I am having issues with it running really rich and almost flooding it self. It has a walbro 190 lph pump on a stock FPR, I want to check fuel pressure to see if there is too much at the rail. Also trying to get a throttle cable hooked up and adjusted (Easier said than done with 2 cables and working in a really tight space). Right now just wanting to keep the engine stock and get it running properly. I want some help and HONEST opinions on the car and how it looks or what I should change. Please tell me, I want this to be an awesome car. Give me motivation, being a auto tech it is hard to go to work for 8 hours and come home to work on more cars, LOL.

Done so far is:
-Built trans: with Heavy duty side cover, super differential, transmission mid mount, stage 2 clutch disc and pressure plate, etc.
-upgraded rear suspension and chassis: urethane bushings everywhere, chassis brace to prevent flex on launch, cage
-upgraded front suspension: urethane bushings everywhere, caster fix sway bar bushings (yet to be installed), gas charged strut cartridges, front disc brakes, strut bar brace (yet to be installed)

Interior: glowshift boost, tach, water temp, oil psi gauges, dynamat
Tires: mickey thomson radials in rear on 8" wide rim, bridgestone potenza RE-11s in the front on 6" wide rim
Engine: Resealed and rebuilt, aftermarket exhaust manifold, EGR delete, 3" exhaust, Honda civic dual core radiator for fitment, fuel lab fuel filter w/ 6 AN lines, walbro 190, external oil cooler with AN lines

Before all the hoses, wiring, piping, etc. I plan to build a shroud around this so it is sealed off from the inside.

After everything. Yes there is a spal fan on the intercooler to simulate a constant 45 mph of airflow. I still need to mount a lot of things such as air filter, resistor pack, rad, intercooler, etc. It was a bi*** trying to find radiator hoses from different cars to fit. LOL

This is where I am now, disregard the front fender I need to fix it, but give me opinions on it, I might trim it down like the rear fender. It doesnt match

The rear shroud and scoops on the back will force air into the radiator, and oil cooler. Should I keep the "nerf" bar (metal bar) on the side of the car? Originally a running board would be there but the rear fender is trimmed and it wouldnt work.

What color should I paint it? I was thinking pearl white like my 3000gt, or a gun metal gray to match black wheels and trim

Nice build, have a friend that has done similar set up, your subframe looks really nice, is that an aftermarket or you did it yourself.
How abot your tranny. will it hold up to te power?

Congratulations

Mandy

Hahaha nice I have a 73 super. I can see the best of both worlds in ur build keep it up

love the build man, VW Beetle... my mom went through 3 of these cars back in her day LOL.

are you looking for lots of angles on a radiator hose... this might help you out [see image in link below] http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=346886&cc=1171965
it's one of the weirdest radiator hoses I have ever come across while I was in a wrecking yard pulling out my g4cs motor from a 1990 Hyundai sonata, I kinda thought to myself "that looks like it could work on a custom 4g63t motor swap project...or someone else's"

And a white paint job would look good on the car maybe do a two tone... well if the white alone does not suit you.

Thats pretty bad ass. Should run pretty good seeing as how thats a small light car. Get it running right then slap a holset on it and crank up the boost to make a monster. Good luck on the build

I believe you're talking about the cage, I bought that but welded all the light mounts on it and painted it with POR15. The transmission should hold up. Popular swaps in these cars are EJ25s out of subarus and the 4G63 has similar power. I did all the upgrades the subie guys do so only time will tell LOL. Thanks for the replies everyone, what do you think about the front fenders? I might lower the front a little if I can't get that wheel gap to shorten.

If ever a 4g63 "needed" a clear cam gear cover and some goofy neon purple gears.. it's this one. I love that rear cowl.

Perfect opportunity to set up your downpipe and wastegate dump(s) all of maybe 18" and aiming straight back too!

It depends on what your plan for this car is, i.e track or street. I say lower it to give it the attitude it needs and keep the front fenders stock so it keeps those VW lines. With the nerf bars I would paint them the same color as your rear motor cage. I would try to utilize your scoops to the full potential. You don't necessarily need an oil cooler and could use that scoop to get air temps down with the intercooler. As some one has previously stated I would route all exhaust out the back. You could even make it look like the stinger exhaust systems that they make for the Beetles if you wanted to have a combination of both the 4g63 and the bug. As for color I like the primer look LOL but, it would be sick white with black wheels, motor cage, and nerf bars. Definitely subscribing to this thread as there is a '65 vert in my parents garage.

Thanks for all the replies :)
I like all the suggestions. Yes I have a 3" 90 degree SS elbow that I need to weld onto the exhaust still to have it come out the back. I like the idea of a clear timing cover, I have the upper cover off now and it looks cool with the gears in the open. I forgot to say this car will be a street/track car for the most part running 1/4 mile occasionally. Depending on how fast it is with how light the car is, I may add a roll cage but I don't know yet for sure, I haven't driven it yet. Dsmspick said to lower it first and I think that is what I will do if I can find some used drop spindles or springs. I don't want to cut into those brand new front fenders just yet if I dont have to. I think if the wheel gap clears up it may look better.

Here is the turbo setup, stock 14b that I rebuilt for now with aftermarket manifold. Hard piping for fresh air side for clearance issues. Intercooler piping is a mixture of stock hoses and silicone/aluminum piping, again for fitment. I got the manifold with the engine and it doesn't look like the best of quality but it will have to do.

As for the wastegate dump, can someone enlighten me on what that does? If I did this, I would need a new 02 housing right?

Another question. Should I put the front bumper back on and cut holes in the fender for the bumper bracket, or leave it and keep the clean fender look? The bumper is also painted black, this is an old pic

I like the idea of a bumper in the front, but for me it would hahttp://www.intervest.ca/vdub/vwclub/tony71.jpghttp://www.intervest.ca/vdub/vwclub/tony71.jpg to lose the lights and the license plate to clean it up. The front lights remind me too much of Baja and don't flow well with a strip/Street car theme. If you wanted too you could run just the little chrome or black brackets that stick out where the bumper mounts are. Like this, http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...e.jpg/800px-CalLookVolkswagenKurtVanPerre.jpg
Or go with a different year bumper to give you more attitude. The super beetle bumpers are just too blocky and ugly to me.[DOUBLEPOST=1412143171][/DOUBLEPOST]POSTING FROM MY PHONE, POST IS ALL MESSED UP SORRY!

I will take the bumper idea into consideration, I like it clean too but I may keep the turn signals and 2 running lights on it. Or I was thinking of buying headlights with the turn signal already built into them. That would be super clean.

The rear is chopped for good, no way the original fenders or rear piece would be able to fit around this engine and tires. The transmission is the original one from the car rebuilt and upgraded.

I think Im going to work on the throttle cable this weekend. I am trying to make a guide tube that will bolt to the transmission so there is no slack in the cable.

Best thing you could do to a bettle, 6g63 FTW!
