I'm having some problems diagnosing a problem with the stock oil pressure gauge on a 1997 GST Auto that I purchased. I've reviewed numerous threads in hopes to find a fix without success.

I'd like to keep this car as simple as possible and make all factory components work so adding an aftermarket oil pressure gauge is out of the question.

Here's what I'm experiencing:
When the Oil Pressure Sending unit and Oil Pressure switch (dummy light) are connected, the oil pressure gauge jumps to max and burns out the gauge coil (in the cluster). This even happens when the car is turned to the accessory position BEFORE I start it.

I've gone through the following to fix without success:
swapped with a cluster from my 99 GST spyder
swapped ECU from my 99 GST spyder
replaced alternator
replaced battery
rewired battery ground terminal
inspected battery positive terminal
inspected all fuses/replaced burnt ones

The only thing that stopped the oil pressure gauge needle from spiking is when I removed the wires to the Oil Pressure switch and oil pressure sending unit.

Does anyone know where these two wires lead to? My guess is that the sensors are fed into another computer within the car and that may be at fault OR I have an issue with both wires shorted against one another.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Those sensors don't go to the ECU, dunno why you swapped it. They go to the gauge cluster. I'm sure you tried swapping the sensors out with known good or new ones already, right? The dummy light gauges goes to, you guessed it, the dummy light. Get a new oil pressure sensor.

sounds like you have a short to ground somewhere between oil pressure sensor and gauge. not sure about 2g's but i know 1g's have 1 wire that goes to oil pressure sensor and one to oil pressure switch. if you take the wire and ground it out it will go to max on the gauge.

test with ohm meter should read 42 plus or minus 2 ohms to test gauge

only diagram i could find but you can poke and prod with a voltmeter between here and the sensor make sure its getting 12v

Thanks to all those who replied. I had the front bumper cover off so I decided to troubleshoot the wires themselves. Both wires had continuity to the gauge cluster plug and no ground shorts.
I then reviewed the cluster itself and noticed the wire that was connected to the Oil pressure switch (dummy light) was routed to the oil pressure gauge and the wire connected to the oil pressure sending unit was connected to the dummy light (swapped). Whoever worked on this car before had them wired backwards.

I've also replaced the oil pressure sending unit with another one from a working motor. The oil pressure gauge moves a little upon start up but it's not functioning as normal. I'm assuming that the guage may have been damaged due to the wires being reversed. Either way, I'm off to look for another cluster and see if I can finally get this issue fixed. I'll report back once i have an updated.

Ok.. Been a while, had to deal with house stuff, work stuff, blah, blah..... now back to the eclipse oil pressure gauge problem.

- I purchased an oil pressure testing kit from Harbor Freight (man do I love this store) to verify whether or not I'm getting oil pressure. Cold Startup was 70 and slowly dropped (was only on for a few seconds).
- I retraced the sending unit wire from the dash to the connector. Minimal loss using a volt meter.
- I then grounded the sending unit wire to ground and checked the cluster. NOTHING.
- I then swapped the cluster out for the original cluster (oil pressure needle sits at 25% when off). The stupid thing now moves (where as it didn't before) however it doesn't move like my other GST's did, only a slight raise of the needle took place.
- I decided to hook up the wire to the oil pressure sending unit and start the car with the original cluster. The needle moves slightly but not the movement I am used to seeing.

I now know that the wiring is good, the sending unit works and the cluster half-a** works.

My questions are as follows:
How often do these gauges go out?
Is it possible to rebuild the oil pressure guage without spending a ton of money?

Some may ask why I'm going through the trouble and why I don't install an electric aftermarket gauge. The answer is simple, I like *restoring* these cars. So many are riced out it's unebelievable. And furthermore, I see people put bandaids on problems all the time. It's nice to have a car tastefully modded with everything functioning as the manufacturer intended.

Either way, that's my rant. If anyone can help, I'd GREATLY appreciate it!

If the needle moves at all than the coil is good still in it. I would replace the pressure sending unit for the gauge. They are pretty notorious for failing and causing the pressure to read very low.

I'm under the impression that our oil pressure gauges should rest at 0 when the car is off. Unfortunately, this cluster is @ 1/4 way. I have no reserves about purchasing a $30 sending unit, my concerns are whether or not I'll get a full sweep reading.

Any thoughts?

The gauge rests at the same spot (1/4) whether it's hooked up or not. I even had it removed from the car and it still rested at the same spot.

Is there a way to recalibrate these?

Does it move at all when you start the car? If it does than you could probably pull the needle and reinstall is at the lowest position possible than put it back in and see where it is.

It moves up a 1/4 of the way after I turn the car on. I may try to dissamble and "realign" the needle. Let's see if I can do this without breaking something.

I know this thread is really old but I was wondering if you can tell me what wire goes to the gauge? I need to tap into the wire loom and connect a oil pressure sensor because my car didnt come with an oil pressure sensor and there are no extra wires that would go to one so I have to start from scratch. Can you please tell me what wire and the color of the wire do I have to tap into to get the stock gauge to respond? Thanx.

I personally wouldn't waste any effort trying to get the stock gauge to work because it's useless. I would never trust it. I highly recommend a prosport electric gauge. I've gotten both of mine for $30 here on the forums.

But if you insist, then it's pin 41 yellow/red. Just be careful. There's another yel/red(pin 30) that goes to the cluster and it's for the headlight system.

Prosport Eh? Ill have to try them. I run a glowshift elec oil gauge and it is SHIT. It jumps around like crazy and reads zero after op temp reached. If that was the case the engine would be toast. If the prosport is accurate ill try it, otherwise im runnin mechanical from now on.
OP, +1 for the Press sending unit. If your gauge needle moves it most likely works. Which leaves only the wire and the sending unit.

Thanx Ed.

Hey Ed I was just looking at sone wiring diagrams and it says pin 41 is the generator terminal. U sure it's for the oil gauge?

I need help with a similar problem on a 95 awd talon my oil gueage reads at the half way mark when key is on possition one I crank the car the gauge will take about 20 secs then drop completely to zero any guess why?

Bringing it back from the dead. I know the stock gauge is useless and all of that. I just want everything working in my car and it irritates me that the oil pressure gauge is pegged. If anyone could give me some pointers I would greatly appreciate it. Motor is all under 2000 miles now everything was new. Gauge did work at one point but now is just pegged all of the time no matter what never moves. Please help. I attached some pics
