Looking at a Craigslist ad it says:
Evo MHG 16G 50 trim turbo
What does MHG mean? Did some searching online and I didn't really find much.
Thanks!

Aaaahhh...... That would make more sense. Would that make it a TD05H then?

Suspicion all over the place.

- MHG is nothing. MHI stands for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The seller either doesn't have what he thinks he has, or knows absolutely nothing about the turbo in his possession.

- Evo III 16G's are not described in "trim" at all. "Trim" is Garrett's terminology to separate a series of wheels which all have the same exducer spec. HOWEVER, trim = (inducer^2 / exducer^2) x 100.

So (48.2^2 / 68^2) x 100 would be (2323.24/4624) x 100, or .50243 x 100 = 50.243.

He's technically correct, whether it happened intentionally or accidentally.

Dayum! That's it. How can you tell? Just so I can educate myself so I'll know the real thing when I see it.

The cold side housing would look different I suppose and it would have TD05H written on it like this one.
Notice how it looks a bit different from the 16g in that ad. Also the turbine wheel looks different or whatever you call them. JusMX141 will know exactly how to tell you to clarify the difference I'm just a noob at turbos identification.

Cool. If anyone else has some advice feel free to chime in! :)

advice? Stay away from chinachargers.
It's one of those things any of us has been in the scene for awhile got tired of a long time ago. I can't stress how much more it's worth to pay the $250-300 you can get a genuine good 16g for rather than getting a junk china charger to save maybe $50-100. My 16g on my car has ran 20+ 11 second passes, seen a lot of street abuse, and has 10k miles alone from me on it - who knows how many miles on it from its past life since it was rebuilt or bought new. It still has relatively no shaft play and performs like new.
I wouldn't expect a new chinacharger to last me a week.

Yea I agree my 14b has 204k miles on it and I'm guessing it's never been rebuilt before and it has zero play at all and I mean zero. However if you do ever come across a ebay turbo and plan to use it, get a rebuild kit right away. Also get it balanced all china turbos are unbalanced and thats the main reason they have terrible reviews once balanced ive seen then last 10k+ miles of abuse

A complete parts kit for a knockoff 16G/20G isn't that easy to find. I *think* places like Godspeed or CXRacing sell them, but I'm not 100% sure of that. I normally just rob the usable parts (turbine housing, actuator, misc clamps & snap rings) and throw the rest away when one of these units come my way.

They're balanced. If they weren't, they wouldn't last two miles.

I've even seen some of the more-recent knockoffs having cuts on the compressor locknut, which tells me the turbo's been VSR-balanced...a level of balancing that companies like Precision didn't even utilize until quite recently. Still doesn't make up for non-inconel turbines that snap and compressor wheels made out of recycled soda cans that can lose blades just from everyday use.

I figured a oem rebuild kit would still work on a knockoff never ran across one being skeptical about them all the time. But it's good to know the recent ones are being balanced at least they are showing some signs of improvement. If you rebuild a turbo does it need rebalanced? I know mhi turbos or I think have balanced parts so they don't, but what about fp, garret, or holset?

You figured wrong. :D

I don't think you understand what I'm saying....they've always been balanced to some degree whether it be component, rotor-plane, etc- however some of the more-recent units have had evidence of being VSR-balanced, the same as a factory Mitsubishi turbo when new. Obviously they're still failing if the VSR-balanced units are reaching me.

Yes and no. There are hundreds of threads containing info on that topic here on our site- search around a bit so you're not guilty of thread-jacking nor do I have to repeat myself for the 674th time. ;)

Depends on the manufacturer's balance tolerance per model- there is no blanket balancing requirement for any and all turbo brands.
