So randomly on the highway the trans went from 5th to neutral and i tried putting it back into 5th and it just wouldnt go. Any help guys?

I'd be willing to bet that the nut on the end of the shaft that holds 5th gear on has came loose. Does it shift in all gears fine, and does the shifter linkage still feel tight.

Would that be a common problem for our transmissions?

If the transmission is jumping out of 5th, that is one of the causes. Other causes could be chipped teeth on the gear, ran low on gear oil.

When you have it in 5th and try to push it out of gear without pressing the clutch, what do you feel? does it just slip out? If you feel alot of vibration compared to the other gears, or it in deed just slips out, it may be a bad syncro in the transmission. Its always a guessing game till you have it apart, however these are the symptoms i had with my cars in the past that concluded a bad syncro.

how do check that out?[DOUBLEPOST=1411197155][/DOUBLEPOST]1st, 3rd and 4th are good but some times in reverse it grinds but not a lot of times only rarely and 2nd gear grinds when i would normaly shift and can only get into 2nd gear if running at very low rpms. but also where do i check the linkage and nut?

To tighten the 36mm nuts on the input & intermediate shafts instead of the way they say, place the tranny in both 1st and 5th gears at same time to hold the shafts. 5th is done by removing the spring pin holding the shift fork, then the fork, and then sliding the syncro sleeve into 5th. Don't do something stupid like jamming a penny or rag between 5th gears teeth as some people say. It won't hold them solid enough and will just cause damage.

I want to make this clear. A syncro, or blocking ring will NEVER cause a transmission to pop out of gear. It has nothing to do with holding it in gear. It would be awesome if people would quit saying that thread after thread after thread. The job of the syncro is to synchronize the gear to the speed of the shaft when you shift so that it doesn't grind. It does nothing more, nothing less. If you are popping out of gear than you have either a clearance problem with the bearings, a worn out slider, worn out splines on the gear, or damaged keys in the hub.[DOUBLEPOST=1411201866][/DOUBLEPOST]
maybe syncors? my first gear does it. still not sure what the cause is though

First gear popping out in these transmissions is real common. Almost every single time it is caused by the bellhousing side bearing on the intermediate shaft.[DOUBLEPOST=1411201918][/DOUBLEPOST]

A bad syncro will do nothing but cause the gear to grind while shifting.

Bingo. I had the nut come off my 5th way back in 1997. That vfaq sums it up well. I had a writeup on it in the talon digest for you old guys that remember. It blew a three inch hole in my end case.

Just pull the ENDCASE off of the transmission. It is easy to do, just alot of bolts. Take off the Passenger side wheel to access it and the splash guard. Then take out all of the bolts on the endcase and pull it off so you can physically see what is going on. Drain the trans before of course. Mine had the mainshaft nut off and had broken the endcase, so I had to find a used '90 endcase and bought my parts from Jacks Transmissions here on our website. They were very helpful and it wasn't a hard fix. Best advice I can give since I went through this a year ago. Had to replace 5th syncro, reverse syncro, both retaining rings for the syncro keys and I put new keys in also. Make sure you get the "wave" spring back in its proper position but its obvious how it sits in there so it won't spin. Luv2Ralle summed it up pretty good in his response. This is what I had to do and it fixed it right up. Tighten down a new nut and spike it into place so it doesn't come loose again. Torque to spec, around 100 ft/lbs if I recall. Good luck, its not hard. Seal it all back up with silicone sealer or Mitsu bond, your choice. Thats the way it came from the factory.

So true, buy some 3 bond it's almost the same as mitsu bond and its cheaper. The correct trans gear oil cause that makes a big difference in shifting effort, and use a decent size, but not sharp, chiesel and stake it after you torque it. Everyone else pretty much summed it up, good luck!

I'm still relatively new to the dsm life and the car life in general but thats just what i was told was syncros by many people. i was told by one person it wasnt so thats why i put a question mark after it because i wasnt sure.

Good to see your asking questions, that's how you learn. That happens a lot, people misinterpret things based on a little bit of knowledge. How's that saying go LOL? Hang in there man it gets easier/better. Let us know what the problem was when you resolve it.
