Like the title states. I'm in the market for a new set of forged pistons. Looking to make around 500 to 600 awhp on e85. I don't need opinions on my set up and no my profile is not up to date. I'm not asking for help with tuning and turbo selection or anything like that. This thread is only about comparing Mahle, Wiseco, and Ross pistons (mostly shelf stocked) for the 1g 6 bolt motor. Let the games begin....

My take so far on the three (I'm comparing .020 over, 85.5mm, pistons)

Mahle:

Have the lightest weight pistons out of the 3 ( 293 grams)
Have skirt coatings as a standard feature

Wiseco:

Have both 8.3 and 9.0:1 options as shelf stocking pistons
Also come with skirt coatings as a standard feature

Ross:

Ross has a great reputation within the dsm community
not sure if they come with a coating or not

As you may know I am in the same boat as you right now. I have nothing to offer here other than I am looking at the Mahle pistons pretty hard. Seeing as there lighter and cheaper than Wiseco.

I have not looked at the Ross all that well.

i voted for weisco because thats what im running in my motor. Weisco 8.3's to be exact.

The reason i chose em is i live in california and only have 91 octane. Although the drag strip is my main passion, i daily drive my car so i want to be able to run the stock timing map without knocking. I wanted to get away with higher than stock compression, and the motor feels great, but i couldnt mess with 9.0 pistons, not with daily driving 91 octane. Damn california!!! If i had 94 or something id probably go with 9.0

I dont have any experience with any of the other pistons, so i cant comment on em, i pretty much went with the weisco's because they were the most common aftermarket piston with the lowest compression. I was looking at the ross 8.5's, but ive heard that you HAVE to get the ring gaps perfect and all this and that and there was too much confusion (for me) as to what that exact ring gap was to not run too tight and not get slap.

I'm kind of up in the air right now with what I'm going to choose. Even though in the end I usually go with the lightest thing I can find. I like to rev my motors high on a daily basis and with the light weight of the Mahle's and the "standard" 8.3:1 compression ration I think I'll be able to let the turbo and cams make the power that I'm after. I want something that I can pound on day in and day out and not have to worry about taking the motor apart every year for a refreshing. Not saying that I can't do that, I'm just not looking to go that far with this motor. If I was after 1000whp I'd be looking into Grodens and Ross 10.5:1's. I am really looking for something that I can put together with off the shelf parts. I know everyone says you need "custom" or "spec" stuff but, I don't really see any reason off the shelf parts won't handle what I'm looking for. It's more about the tune then anything when it comes to DSM's.

not to put more in your head but im in the same boat as you and i found tonight arias pistons you can get them on ebay for like 380 which is cheaper than any of the others.... good luck with the build but from my research its wiseco!

ok I had to redo this post because I learned some new info. Though some other searching on this fine site, I saw that someone posted about the Wiseco's having a larger skirt area then the Mahle's. Anyone have any good info on this and if the lack of material is a big concern with a DD motor? I'm starting to understand, the more I research, why a lot of people choose to go with Ross pistons.

after a lot of debating I've decided to just go with Mahle's. I'm just tired of looking at posts, reading reviews, and debating with myself. I'm ordering the Mahle 2.0L 8.5:1's in .020 (85.5mm)

hey, im just wondering where you found the weights for all three of those, and if you could post the weight of those, and more pistons/rods out there. I think evil eagle has provided some pretty good reasons to go as light as possible with your high reving 2.0, which is what Im all about. I've been told carrillo's are the lightest non aluminum rods, but I haven't seen any weights. For all I know it could be by 1 gram per rod.

These weights are all for the .020 over (85.5mm) size pistons, set up for the 2.0L stroke, and 6 bolt:

Mahle (8.5:1) 293 grams (extremepsi.com)

Wiseco (8.3:1) 332 grams / (9.0:1) 349 grams (extremepsi.com)

Ross (8.3:1) 352 grams (SBR lists Ross with 352 as there average weight)

Others:
Arias - no info
JE - 317 to 319 grams (extremepsi.com)
Top Line - no info
CP - no info
Manley - no info

I haven't done much searching around for other brands or the weights of the any brands in other sizes (like std. bore or .040, 86mm. Nor have I looked up information about the stroker or 7 bolt series offerings. These numbers came directly from either slowboyracing or extremepsi. I went with SCAT rods and gram weights for rods can be found usually by simply calling a vendor.

My understanding is that Mahle uses a very good German alloy. The skirt design is quite smart and the weight savings is useful.

Ross doesn't make low-expansion stuff, at least according to some Neanderthal on the phone when I called them.

mahle supplies pistons for the Ferrari formula 1 team, so I think they know a little something about skirt design. Not saying that any data collected from there racing efforts go into there street pistons, but.....

My old std. size Wisecos (8.3:1 c.r.) weighed 323.xg. I personally prefer Wiseco's because I don't like oversizing my cylinders unless I have to...and they are relatively light too. The option of having HD pins is also an extra notch on Wiseco's score belt.

In response to your post, I clearly stated that the weights were for .020 sized pistons. I'm not trying to shoot you down or anything. Just saying that I wasn't comparing std. bore weights. Thank you for your input though. More to read for future searchers.

I know this an old thread, but FYI ROSS 99811 piston rings are discontinued. So if you got a set of 99811 pistons and you need rings, good luck, and I'm pullin for ya cause I'm in the same boat.
