Just a mile up the road from me is a nice looking 1991 talon tsi I'll be getting a closer look at it in the next day or so and post some pictures. I've talked with the owner over the phone and he said he stopped driving due to it overheating and it slipped 4 teeth on the timing. I currently have a 1990 eclipse gst that I have the engine pulled so what I planned on doing was just rebuilding my engine and swapping it in.

I offered him $1200 for it, it's 100% complete stock car and it was unmolested due to an older guy owning it. He said the transmission is fine and nothing weird besides overheating and jumping time when he last drove it. From the road no rust or dents that I could see I'll post pictures up soon as I get them. So would $1200 be a fair price or should I try to go down to $1000? I planned to offer less depending on seeing the rest of the car and what all needed fixed.

overheating could be due to head gasket issues. i can imagine that with the timing belt slipping 4 teeth it probably runs like crap. so a test drive may be out of the question. honestly, id offer the guy 800 bucks due to the fact that the timing belt and components will need to be replaced, there could be valve damage, and there is possibly head gasket issues due to overheating.

i know you said you planned on swapping engines, but you dont need to tell him that. use the engine issues to your advantage to get a lower price.

I bought my 1g for 1k that had skipped timing / bent valves. Interior is almost perfect, exterior is rust free, but not perfect. I'll have a running, driving awd talon car for about 2500.

I'll keep all this in mind. When we talked on the phone he said he didn't think the head gasket was bad but he said it might need a radiator as well not sure why. I still haven't got the chance to go look at it, it will probably be this weekend I'll bring a battery to make sure all the lights and stuff work and get some pictures. What are the main places I should check for rust? I know the strut towers for sure.
