so im buying a gsx in a week or so.. beautiful car.. anyway. the guy has taken every turbo part or anything having to do with the turbo out of the motor because he was going to replace everything. all i need is a shopping lsit on everything i need and the best way to go about it. and maybe also the best way to do it. money is a little tight so please dont send me anywhere where im going ot spend 5k putting a turbo into it. thank you so much.. pictures soon of my new beauty!!!! so excited

Find out what kind of turbo it had in it before, and buy accordingly. If it had a stock T25, you'd need the MHI coolant lines and the correct J pipe for the setup (some intercoolers need a drivers side facing pipe, some a front facing, some a passenger facing). Also you'd need the correct oil feed line. The return line is pretty much the same, however the feed is a brake line fitting on the T25 and a way bigger fitting on the Mitsu turbos (14b, 16g, etc).

So find out what you need, because swapping a stock turbo into a car that already had one basically just takes the coolant line crush washers and return line gasket/turbo and o2 housing gaskets. To swap a different turbo in will take varying degrees of stuff depending on what you already have/dont have.

It runs i know it runs because he said he was running too much boost and the pistons were hitting the block.. So hes giving me a new head new rids and new pistons.. And the tranny and clutch are new.. So i know thats fine.. And sorry for not soecifying. I meant a parts list.. I wanna put in an evo iii 16g turbo in it.. So wjat all will i need for that?

Sounds like he's telling you the engine in screwed. Sounds like trouble. Big trouble.

Yes to much boost giving new parts that car is gonna be alot of work new head new lower end machine work all new gaskets i was in this boat last year and i figured a cheap rebuild then i went nuts and said do it once and be done ended up with built motor built trans big turbo built head and spent 8k$ would have been more if a friend didnt part cars and grabbed a few parts from him

I wouldn't buy it unless it was dirt cheap with absolutely no rust. If you do buy it, I'd have a engine ready to go in it. Pistons should not be hitting the head, boost will not cause that. Simply adding pressure will not make pistons travel further, piston rods don't stretch they snap.

Im getting new headr rods and pistons.. And its brand new condition and 85k miles

If this isn't a TREMENDOUS red flag to you, I fear you have no idea what you're getting yourself into.

"he was running too much boost and the pistons were hitting the block"
Boost pressure doesn't cause something like that. Rods don't stretch, they break.
"the guy has taken every turbo part or anything having to do with the turbo out of the motor because he was going to replace everything."
More than likely because he blew it up, too.

Now, if he's selling it to you for the price of a shell + drivetrain (Which is all this car really sounds like) and there's no rust, I would buy it... But I also possess the necessary skills and tools to build an engine and put it back in the car. If the engine is as farked up as it sounds, you're looking at spending a lot more money to get it back in running condition than you may think. Especially if you can't do the work yourself.

We don't like to see anyone get taken advantage of or misled about a car they're buying. But it sounds to me like this guy may be trying to sell you a serious turd.

Im getting it for 1400[DOUBLEPOST=1410570102][/DOUBLEPOST]My dads a car guru so we can do all the work together.. So 1400.. But as far as turboing goes.. What will i need?[DOUBLEPOST=1410584009][/DOUBLEPOST]Too much boost.. I had a upgraded turbo with stock internals.. Valves started hitting a piston. So the head needed to be replaced along with the piston at the very least.. But I figured since I had everything out I wanted to "rebuild" the motor..
16psi, but It didn't have a solid boost controller when I had it so it would spike.. Is what coming with it? The cylinder head, yes.. But the 2.3 stroker kit is not included in the price.

This is exactly what he said.. Copy and pasted from our texts

ok thank you guys so much.. probably saved me a headache. but when i do end up getting one... what is everythin im going to need to uprgrade the stock to a evo 3 16g and where can i get one thats not 1k

http://www.searchtempest.com/ check this site out for finding a dsm, helps the search... a lot!
Search around for info on the 16g swap there is a lot of info on this site, and when you are ready, the best place to get the turbo would probably be the classifieds on this site or your local craigslist. Good luck on the search! Just make sure it's an authentic turbo, no ebay crap Chinese turbos.

The classifieds here would be the best for a turbo i'd say, unless you have connections locally. I got a Big 16g for 30 bucks, but i know people ;)

As for what you'd need, here's everything I can think of:

Coolant feed and drain lines (may or may not come with banjo bolts and crush washers)

Oil feed line (either an OEM 1g or Stainless steel feed)
J pipe and J pipe gasket

That should be about it really. Aside from the o2 and Turbo to manifold gaskets (6cm for a Evo 3 16g), everything else should more or less bolt up. One thing to keep in mind, depending on what j pipe you get, it may or may not have the boost outlet on it for your boost control solenoid/manual controller. In that case you need to find somewhere else to plumb a boost source. Try not to run a ton of T's off of the same one, it starts to affect the accuracy.

I love to hear that, hopefully dad will rub off on you and make you an awesome mechanic! Having a dsm will certainly either break you or make you smarter in the automotive world.

You're making a smart decision to pass this by, I know how bad that sucks, you get that feeling inside like you have to have it, but great things are worth waiting for! TRUST ME!!

You could find a PERFECTLY RUNNING gst or gsx at the right time, with low miles, not hacked to crap for 1-3 grand. A built modded one for 3-7 grand. Life events force us to do what we gotta do. I spent more on N/A's then I did for my GST "because I couldn't wait, had to have that N/A at that time", and my gst has been in the best shape, most reliable, and did I say the fastest?? :)

This 1400$ would have turned into 10k+ to get it road worthy, if the motor is in that type of shape, I could only imagine what the bodies like!

Craigslist is your friend, search it every day, one day you will see the car of your dreams.

AND THE BIGGEST TIP!! You're young, not long ago I was 17 "i'm 31 now, time flys so enjoy it man" , your voice and experience will scare away just about any real car enthusiast not looking for a quick buck, In my older years now, I know I wouldn't sell my car to a kid vs an older adult as I couldn't see all my time and energy pissed away, so get with dad and have him do the talking, it will be to your advantage, and you will get a better deal, and you will find more doors open!

You made a smart decision to walk away from this unless it was just a rolling chassis you were after.

It definitely sounds like he salvaged what he could and is trying to dump the rest on you. You should be offended by his offer but I know the enthusiasm that comes with a new dsm. Kind of like buck fever. Pass on that deal.

well guys i found it. bought it.. 600$ bought it off my dads buddy its a 1997s gst spyder.. 130k miles.. says the motor wont start but all it is is an elactical problem that my dad saw.. ill have pics very soon of it starting out.. im so excited..[DOUBLEPOST=1410822105][/DOUBLEPOST]no rust anywhere

its got in intercooler and a greddy blow off valve.. but i have a buddy selling me a bunch of stuff.. guages, guage cluster.. MHI evo 3 16 g turbo. greddy intercooler.. greddy bov.. some cam wheels.. new valve cover.. new intake.. now injectors.. new fuel pump.. boost controller, subs and a stereo deck.. new struts stage 2 clutch.. he had a 2g and put alllllll of that stuff on his. and then the motor blew 2 months later.. and he has no money for a new motor. so im buying it from him,, ripping everything off it that i need.. and then either scrapping it or selling the shell.

Good point.
