Hello all! I recently picked up a 100% stock 1997 GSX manual. Im in love. I used to be into the integras and stuff, but man oh man do I love this little DSM. Ive been doing tons of research because Im addicted to the BoV sound. Im looking for some advice. I know its been covered but I have not found anything specific, just the fact that it has to be recirculated or it will run rough unless you do some other stuff.

Basically, I am looking for a louder boost blow off valve sound. I have read on this site that the 2g BOV that I have leaks real bad, and I can barely hear it. I am looking for a decently priced BoV that comes with or I can order separately a re-circulation kit, and one that I can install easily without and welding.

Im really looking for the sound from the BoV that I am addicted to now, as well as protect from any leaks. IDK if I am going to increase any boost psi since the motor has 160k on it and Im not really racing people. I want to preserve this baby.

My question to you guys. Can someone shoot me link where I can get a BOV that will sound nice with my car, that I can attach with least modification, and one that is recirculating? I understand that it will be quieter as opposed to venting to atmos, but im sure someone here has a recirculating aftermarket BoV that sounds bad ass.

Thank you so very much!

PS. I am already going to get rid of that airbox and get a cone filter, I heard that makes it louder too!

Thank you guys for your replies! Bryanwheat, what outlet plastic tube are you talking about? And from what I read the 1g bov isnt much louder?

Ny95TSI - so would I need the steel intercooler piping for that flange? How would I mount it on the stock plastiky pipe? Would I attach the flange to the pipe with a hose clamp? Also, are the NGR BOV recirculating?

That flange just slides into the hole in the plastic pipe that the stock 2g bov does. The 1g bov isn't really any louder, but not many are specifically louder other than the turbo xs rfl, but they are junk, and not able to be recirculated. You aren't going to have something that is recirculated that is really loud. It is just a bypass valve that bypasses air from the intercooler pipe to intake pipe. The only way to make it louder while recirculating is an aftermarket filter and trimming the pipe in the intake pipe. The pipe that i am talking about is the spot on the intake pipe where the re-circulation fitting attaches to. The pipe itself is about 8 inches long inside the intake pipe. You need to remove it from the intake pipe, trim it so that it is just a tad bit longer than the thickness of the flange on the intake pipe, than epoxy it back into the intake pipe. http://www.tgilmore.com/talon/dumptube.html

Awesome, you are an amazing help and just cleared up a lot. So what would be the loudest recirculating BOV that is reasonably priced, and would have a flange so its easy to install? Maybe those SSQV HKS things?

Also, I noticed a lot of people run the K&N filter, but its like 200$!! I just ordered a cheap ebay cone filter with the MAF adapter. That should be ok too, or would the K&N make a noticeable enough difference to where buying it is a good idea?

Thanks again for your help I greatly appreciate it and apologize for these noobish questions.

The hks ssqv isn't so much louder as it is just a different type of sound. It is a more of a fluttering sound compared to a solid release like the 2g, 1g, greddy, ngr and so on. As i said, none of these are really going to be louder than the stock one, especially if you are recirculating. I would worry more about a bov functioning properly than hearing it make noise. It isn't there to make noise, it is there to relieve pressure from the system to prevent compressor surge. With the trimmed dump pipe and aftermarket filter it will be quite a bit louder, but it will never be as loud as a vented bov. As for the filter the cheaper ones are usually good, as long as it isn't the foam style like the hks. I like the spectre ones that they sell at oreilly auto parts myself. K&n is kind of over rated.

Hahaha yeah I keep hearing about the 2g bov leaking so thats why I want to replace it, as well as the noise. I kind of like the noise that goes Whooosh tshhh tshhh tshhh. Hahah. Not a chirp but more of a whoosh. Could you link me a bov and recirc kit and flange that you think would sound the best on the car or most like the noise I mentioned earlier? Or should I just go with the NGR the other guy wrote? I just didnt see a recirculation kit, or do I just plug in the already existing vacuum hose on current BOV.

Sorry for all the questions :(

edit: The NGR one is $150, I see the HKS one is like $70 but I dont see a way to make it recirculate.
Basically, if you think the NGR one is the best thats what I will get, but if theres another BOV that makes that whoosh sound thats cheaper and still recirculates, could you maybe show me a link?

Again, what sound it makes is irrelevant. The ngr is just basically an adjustable/rebuildable version of the 1g bov, as are the greddy type s, rs, and rz. You can go to youtube and search for different ones and find the sound that you like, but as i said, don't worry about the sound, worry about how well it actually functions. What is the point of having something that sounds cool, if it leaks, and your car runs like crap. It would be best for you to just quit thinking about how cool your bov is going to sound, and put a modded 1g bov on there recirculated and spend your money on doing maintenance on the car.

I see what you are saying. The sound adds to the whole experience for me, so thats why its a little important, but you do make a lot of sense. I think the 1g is the route I am going to go. The only maint. it needs after that is theres a minor leak somewhere coming from the timing cover so I think it may be a cam seal. I just got the car so im going to do full inspection this weekend. Then maybeldo hard intercooler piping and maybe intake piping. Then I want to learn how I can adjust the boost levels without blowing up my car. I got a lot to learn about this thing. But youve helped me a huge amount and Im forever thankful!

The 1g bov is certainly a good option. I loved mine, but It was old and would leak during a boost leak test, so I got the ngr. There was a group buy for only $100 that you recently missed out on. Even recirculated both are loud. Not sure how much louder I would want it.

That is why you do the dodge garage mod to them. They will hold 30+ psi no problem. A lot of people are still into crushing them which pretty much ruins them in my opinion.

If you really want to go all out you could get a front mount intercooler with hard pipes, a 3" gm maf right before the throttle body, a maf translator, some kind of tuning device and then dont recirculate the bov. Keep an eye out in the classifieds and you can probably find all that stuff for a few hundred $ total.

Might as well have fun with the car and modify it how you want. Some people arent as much into extracting every little bit of performance from the DSM and thats ok
