Hey I am about to pick up a dsm first time owning and I am pretty excited. I want to put a wishlist together to get it all organized. I did some reading on "Basic Horsepower Upgrades" a thread started on this fourm, and I want to get a Tial 50mm QR BOV )http://www.extremepsi.com/store/product.php?productid=23219&cat=390&page=1) but I am not entirely sure on what spring to pick? They do have a chart and I was thinking the "8psi" spring because that's around the stock vacuum pressure. But if I turn up the boost later on to say 14-16 from stock will my vacuum pressure change? If so should I got with the 10 psi spring?

Sorry for posting this question on the newbie thread but I am not a member yet.

You can get a evo 3 16g for like 250-350 depending on condition. Most of us get turbos from justin on here jusmx141. Anyways I wouldn't spend all that money for a tial at your hp level. You can save and get a good bov that will work for your goals for way cheaper. Spend the money on tuning, gauges, maintenance, then bolt ons.

Thanks for the advice, tuning? I am a little confused on that, I know about dsm link a little and I also know I need a new ecu or eprom thing? Still a little confused on that tuning part. Why tuning though? to change fuel ratios?

Yeah among other things. When you get bigger injectors and turbo eta you need to change settings like afr. Why get a afr gauge and if you can't do a thing to change the ratios?
I'm a little afraid that I will jack up the motor if I do that, guess I need to do a lot more read. Thanks for replying to my responses really appreciate it! So you think my order of buying would be to get a dsm link and read a lot about it?

dsmlink would be a great first mod. It sounds like you have a little bit of an idea of what you want out of the car, and if you plan on getting it in the future anyways. Why wait to read about it? You can always start right now.

Yah, what are the benefits of dsmlink other than seeing your engine and car in detail?

I mean you can do the intake exhaust and maintenance first but then you should get tuning software, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, gauges, boost controller. You will be set
Okay thanks, as far as the maft gm mod or just do the honeycomb stock mas which is better? Now I was looking at the fp intake pipe and getting a k&n filter. But I'm not sure the fp intake will fit on the stock turbo?

You will jack up the motor if you start moding it and don't have a way to tune

You don't need either , leave the stock mas alone or go speed density later if you get ecmlink and start moding the car more.

I want to do it the right way, but I can't just drop a 1000$ in the car so it will have to be piece by piece. I saw a sticky on one of the forms about basic upgrades and I also have been reading vfaq upgrade paths. I am getting this car in a couple of days and I want to know what parts I can get to make it go faster. I am a student so I need reliability too, I am not looking for a 400hp dsm yet.
How do you plan on doing your build ? All at once with all the proper supporting mods for the power mods ? Or piece it together as you go?
[DOUBLEPOST=1409697119][/DOUBLEPOST]I want to get basic upgrades like an intake, but maybe I should just keep the stock one and get a new filter?

If you still haven't even gotten the car yet, you are getting way ahead of yourself. You will need to be putting your time and some money into maintenance first. Iso recommend changing all the fluids, filters, and belts as a start for your project. Like you said, you need it to be reliable. Maintenance > go fast parts.

As everyone else has stated, Maintenance should come first, then mods, before modding you should decide what you want out of the car, and research all the parts you'll need to get there, and then start the build after you've accumulated your parts wish list. And DSMlink is the best tuning solution for our cars.

I agree, but hopefully there is little to no maintenance for the car. I have a pretty good budget, but have any ideas for intakes and first simple mods?

Well you could do a quick search on this site and see what other people are doing for their first mods. It has been covered more times than most people can likely count in a single sitting.

I'd go with link as your first step for upgrades. Then wideband, boost gauge, maybe water temp or oil temp or egt for now until you decide what else you want. Those will be essential parts to your build though. I've had the 3 gauge pillar pod in the past, it's nice to have as long as your gauges aren't super bright and youre able to tune out the little bit of a distraction. You could always go for the instrument gauge bezel(?) Or replace your vents in the pod insert if you don't like the pillar.
But as far as maintenance, the basic things like I said, if you dont know when they were changed, change them.

Its a 17 yr old car its going to need maintenance. For an intake just get a mas adapter and filter. No point in getting an intake yet for the stock turbo, if you upgrade your turbo or decide to go speed density then you might have to change it again.
