Driving to the shootout this morning a vibration occurred, I thought it was the road but it quickly became exponentially worse, I signaled to the edge and the tires locked up. Seemed the locked up tires bounced around it didnt seem to be a total rear end lockup like described by tcase failure. This happened in a matter of about 30seconds. Like others I thought flat tire, everything checked out and to boot I was on 80-90. I took my chances and forced the car back onto the road. The problem cleared up and I made it 2 miles before it started again. Thank god I was at an exit, got off, let the car set 15min an was able to drive it 15miles to bass pro to wait for a trailer without another problem.

92 awd 6/4 No prior noises problems, t case has never leaked, drained tcase tonight and found no shavings ran a magnet thru what I collected. Had car on jack stands rear end seems fine. 1 thing I notices is the front differential is not acting like an open diff. Even with the car running in gear on jack stands the driver tire is the only front tire that spins (both rear spins same direction), when I stop the driver tire the passenger tries to turn but just kinda jerks a little.

Im thinking the center differential is bad because the diff is not acting like an open differential. I took the fill plug out of the trans and got heavy metallic flake in the oil (redline mtl mt90 blend maybe 6k miles on it). What I don't get is the whole problem seemed to stem from the rear end (which I didn't have time to drain tonight). Whatever the problem is I can currently drive the car without problems, its my garage queen only drove for diagnostic reasons. While I drove to bass pro it seemed that I was getting a periodic bearing grinding but it seemed to be coming from the rear end.

Wanted some suggestions, I don't want to throw a bunch of money at the car, I'm looking to isolate the problem.[DOUBLEPOST=1408396738][/DOUBLEPOST]Drained oil out of the rear end and replaced with new. Oil still had an amber color and collected no metallic flakes from the oil with a magnet. I'm leaning on center or front diff... thing I don't get is I have not launched the car at all. Either I'm looking in the wrong place or the previous owner was hard on the front/center diff before I bought the car. I was cruising at 70mph when the problem occurred.

Could the problem be the viscous coupling? I have an extra viscous coupling but my extra center diff is broken.

Transmission code is w5m332wqnk which I can find little info on. It seems its a close ratio evo 1 gearbox from what I can gather and the final drive is 3.909. If the final drive was not changed by the previous owner is the reason the drivetrain locked up.

Yea, if the rear tires are turning at a different rate than the front tires, something has to give somewhere, right ?

Wait a min....youve been driving an evo tranny with different ratio. Center diff cant take that.
Can I ask why you wouldve done this? Car should have driven terribly from day one.

Car drove awesome. I bought it from somebody who is on this forum and doesn't know what hes doing. Ive spent 2 years fixing his mess. Car drove without hiccup at all I just drove it 200miles one way a month ago for a vacation. No noises or driveline problems of any kind. Seller took out his trans and put the evo trans in before he sold it to me. I have been very meticulous with this car, ive spent 10x the time making this car nice and reliable as I have driving it. Previous owner said gvr4 first gear so yesterday I ran the tranny stamp... I would have never guessed it had a rare evo 1 box. I wont be able to drop the trans until the weekend an might have to wait to crack it open.

Very true, I didn't expect it to drive so smooth if it still had the 3.909 final drive but I don't know. I plan to pull the trans tomorrow but don't know how far I will tear into it. The plan is to pick up a good trans from an old friend and use it for parts. I for sure would rather have the evo 1 box with the correct ratios.

Well got the trans out and took the rear cover off, the viscous coupling is smoked. The car does have steel shift forks so it is an evo 1 box. I work third and ran outta energy before I got the 5th gear stuff outta the way to look at the center diff. With the car on jack stands in gear you could rotate the tires without turning over the motor. The trans has been rebuilt but I'm not sure by whom. Who sells a viscous coupling? I cant seem to find one and don't really want to weld center diff.

If the viscus issmoked its agood bet the center diff is also. My bet is the cross shaft is smoked and it took out everything else and thsts why you locked.hopefully you didnt get fod elsewhere.

I will tear further into the trans tomorrow and find out more. My dad and I suspect the ratios were off. What I don't get is I drove the car 10 miles to my dads garage yesterday... I drove it really easy. I picked up a good trans and new synchros Thursday for cheap. I don't want to part it out Id rather have it as a spare and rebuild the evo 1 and change the ratios.

That's cool bastarddsm, hopefully tomorrow I will get the trans tore far enough apart to count teeth and figure the ratio. Once I know for sure I will let you know.[DOUBLEPOST=1408904050][/DOUBLEPOST]Got the trans tore apart... found the ouput shaft broken and welded to the side gear and the center diff looks pretty destroyed. Front diff ring gear has 64 teeth and intermediate has 15 (4.26 ratio evo 1). The intermediate shaft is the same tooth count as a standard 1g trans but is smaller in diameter. I need new intermediate shaft, output shaft, viscous coupling, and center diff. My parts bin will not offer any help because all the said parts are not usable. I have a working 90 trans but its 22 spline.
