What reason other than bad coils would a car only run with dis hooked up, it's missing mind you but will run. If I unhook the dis and go back to stock it won't even attemp to fire up.

What do you mean by MSD DIS? I'm quite confused haha.

EDIT: ok nvm seems like an external way of controlling ignition.

Does this completely bypass the ECU? Are you getting any power at the coils when back to stock?

It does not bypass ecu it goes from ecu to msd to coil, it amplifies the spark and adds multiple sparks under 3000rpm. That config it will start but misses under load, idle fine. Stock config car won't even attempt to start. I have seen msd's make bad coils fire before but i had a spare coil that i have swapped into location and it did nothing other than what i am currently seeing. I don't see how if the cas or power transistor was going bad the msd could make it fire with one of those going bad, but that's about all that controls spark. I sent ecu off to upgrade to v3 and had ecmlink check the ecu and they didn't find anything that could cause the misfire. I had 1 leaking cap that would cause an inj malfunction code that i was getting but that's all they found.

You know, i've had some similar weird issue with stock ignition. Whenever, the car would heat soak, like after a 2-3 pull, it would run lean (17 a/r) and than go back to normal after a few minutes.

I replaced power transistor and each coil one at a time, it still had the same issue. Than i installed some smart coils and the problem disappeared!

Also, once tried replacing the mounting bracket the coils sat in with another good one, using same coils and PT the car wouldn't even run. These cars do some weird shifts sometimes Lol

I guess i'm gonna replace the wires and power transistor and see if that makes a difference. I hate throwing random parts at the car no knowing if it will fix it, but guess i can just look at is as having an all new ignition. I also have a black top cas i can swap on as well that way i've replaced everything ignition related.

Well the new power and ground that i ran to the ptu fixed my problem.
