Hello,
My question for all Dsmers, can you help me out with these cam gears, my timing belt broke after I left a rag on top of them and turned on my car on and I saw the rag sitting at the back of my motor and the belt I think it's in the water pump and behind it. It's real difficult to pull it out. The cam gears have words on them and I was wondering if their suppose to be evenly together one is even an the other is sitting sideways. Please help!

First off, those look like 420A Timing Gears, correct? If this is the case (really its the same regardless) disregard the lettering. You need to align the cam pins to 12:00, then line up the timing marks on each gear with each other (3:00-9:00).

*update* it actually doesn't look like yours has the cam pins visible. I'm guessing they are under the bolts. Focus on the timing marks.

Here is another good photo. It looks like the 2Ga's had paint marks instead of grooves.

Thanks,
Im not familiar with the motor, It may be the 420a because i saw the 4g63 and it's opposite of that. I've had trouble with looking for marks, I know it had the same letters on the other side and your right about timing the pins and the gears. It will be better if I take it to a shop.
You might know how much it may cost?
Should I, If need the motor mounts and if i buy new camshafts and new cam gear do it all at once?
Do you think you might know what price im looking to do this job?

Im gonna print your good word with me and show a friend first and see if he might know what's up.

Yeah its a 420A. GS or RS. I kind of figured you would have trouble with the markings with them painted on like that. You could try and get a look at the pins behind the gear and go off that or even take one off, turn it around and count the teeth to make new marks on the front, but if you don't feel comfortable with it, then by all means take it in to a shop. I couldn't tell you pricing, as it will always be dependent on location and type of shop. Just call a couple places around you. I never let anyone work on my cars but me though, because I've seen some of the horrors that come out of shops, even dealers (of which I used to work). Ask around for a place around your area that is trustworthy and go with them.

Yes do it all at once. The motor mounts don't need to be, but the rest will all require the removal of the timing belt so it would be best to do it all at the same time to save money and time.

Also new gears will likely come with the timing marks...so that will help you do it yourself if you wait for that.
