I will try to give as much detail as possible and answer questions ASAP.

95 AWD 5 speed w/Light mods.
230,000 Miles
Had it about 4 months.
Replaced control arms, all 4 tires (dry rotted), and tie rod ends 100 miles ago.

My car is making a roaring sound which I believe is coming from the trans. Also I can feel it in the pedal, floor, wheel, etc. It is based on speed and continues as long as the tires are turning. Does not go away when clutch is pressed or trans is out of gear. Trans shifts perfect thru every gear and into R. Best way to describe it is wheel bearing noise, but doesnt fade or get worse with swerving at speeds like a wheel bearing. Im leaning towards center diff (Or maybe I mean front diff). With the car in the air all 4 wheels spin and the roaring is constant thru all gears. I think I feel a slight skip or jump when I take slow tight turns, but I will take it to a parking lot to check for sure because my driveway rocks are big. Havent drained the gear oil completely but did check that it was full and the tcase is full. No leak stains on trans or tcase. No metal on magnetic drain plugs either. So a few questions:

Shouldn't only 3 tires spin instead of all? (When the passenger caliper was locked up 3 spun, so I rule out a welded diff.)
If my diff is bad should 1 or more tires spin slower?
Can the diff still be good and just the diff bearings be bad in this situation?
Due to the high mileage should I just replace the trans? (Dont have funds for a full rebuild, but could do the diff bearings.)
I would like some confirmation on my line of thinking before tearing my car down. It was my DD for delivery job. Thanks in advance everyone.

Thanks for the replies. Previous owner said he changed the fluid when he put the 14b on in January. Waiting for my friend to get back in town to bring his stethoscope. We will be changing the fluid again and maybe trying out a spare tcase.

I agree it is probably bearings in t case growling due to no lube. The yoke leaks and the t case runs dry and had caused accidents from locking up all four on the highway. So just pull the drain plug and see if any is in there and if there is metal flakes in it. Could also be the trans, so check and or change that with the correct oil, makes a huge difference in shifting.

Before you say the trans is the culprit, jack the front end up so the wheels are off the ground. Make sure the trans is in neutral. With one hand, grab the spring on the strut, and with the other hand spin the wheel.

If you feel a vibration in the strut, start with that wheel bearing. Now, you may feel a slight vibration, but if its VERY noticable, then its time for a wheel bearing. You can compare the two sides and see if there is a major difference.

I have had cases where a W/B would make noise while driving, but loading and unloading(swearving) had no effect.

If you elimintate that 100% then look at the drivetrain.
