So Ive owned 3 1Gs, which my GSX is getting tough to drive everyday with its mods, been needing a nice clean daily to leave relatively stock, with more room, but still show my DSM pride. Of course I needed my first 2G. I got it thinking it was a shell with a trans, then he threw in rebuilt head for a little more, then when I got there I was greeted with a complete longblock in the car, rebuilt head already on! Ok. Mods I saw were a catback, it obviously had a FMIC in its past, was lowered on GSX rims. I drove on a work night, there and back, left at noon, was back at 7am, and went straight to work! Was totally worth it! Im going to do a running total on everything to keep track, I personally think Ill come well ahead getting an incomplete project car rather than a running car that may have god only knows how many issues, at least this way I know many things will be new and done right :)

As you can see the engine was stripped of a bit of its bits, but I was more than happy with what I got. First step was try and figure out if the head was put on and rebuilt correctly. Leakdown test showed 10-18% cold, which showed head sealing and fresh rings! Awesome!! I got an array of parts and started getting things together.

No idea what catback this is, but itll work if it doesnt sound too ricey
It has tokiko blues and ST springs, but with how low the thing sits, Im suspecting they its seen the torch, I had to sneak a floor jack under both ends just to get the legs of the hoist under it

I dropped the pan to check out the bottom end. Near as I can tell it had a turbo or a bearing go out in its past, to put a lot of debris in it. The bearings looked okay, journals looked pretty good, it just had a lot of chunks from a past failure in it

No idea why somebody would put a new rebuilt head, on a damaged bottom with all this shit in it, but oh well whatever.
This is rod #4, the worst of them all, still totally runable

Got the turbo on and mostly plumbed, replaced the coolant hoses, went softline on one, turbo drain, stock rear coolant line, getting more pieces for the feed line.
2.5 downpipe is on, mated to stock cat for now until it passes smog, then a test pipe will go on. Getting close now

And the part of the DSM game we hate... shit didnt work out. I put insurance on it, took it for its first spin around the block, and noticed rod knock on decel. I tried the band aid fix of rolling in new bearings (rod/mains) motor honey, and an oversize oil filter, but it knocked exactly the same. The prev owners just had their untrained hands over too much shit and I obviously need to go everywhere to make it right. They actually tried to fix one of the rod bearings with sandpaper! It had cross hatching that only that could do. This is all the oil pressure I got on a cold start

Unfortunate turn of events dude. Welcome to the 2G club though! Have any plans yet on whether you're rebuilding or swapping?

Thanks! thats the million dollar question I guess....To be honest Ive really lost track of what to do on this car at this point. On one side I wanna build it up and make it fast but on the other I remember I wasnt supposed to and this is the daily driver. I do have a spare 6 bolt longblock, but I would feel bad doing a 6 bolt into a fwd. If I could find a good awd swap donor car then yeah Id swap it in a second, but for now 7 bolt is at the machine shop getting checked out, hoping to keep it on the cheap side and just drive/enjoy the thing ASAP, since the same machine shop has my 6 bolt going in the 1G which is the "primary build" so to speak.

Bet you all thought I lost interest in this one huh... The machine shop has been a little behind, but the verdict is in about the rod knock...number 4 rod was, .011 under...the rod bearings had crosshatches in it which could only be hand made, not rotational like a crank, and the rod cap was mismatched from another set LOL... on top of that the bores had taper, so got some 85.5mm NPRs
AFD61C02-C5BB-4D09-A869-2B1BACE72F9C_zpsrupa01ja.jpg
Also bought a used ebay 16g so I can steal the 7cm hotside and run it on the 14b
9452DBC2-8E52-43A9-96F5-D435860A24CF_zpsfnz1g8q1.jpg
Got a cheap LSD insert (I know I know theyre risky and dont handle a lot of power, but screw it why not)
Then the cars getting some hand me downs, it'll get my old boost gauge, manual boost controller, I got given a virgin crank that will polish out. Everything is at the machine shop and things are in motion, trying to get a rod and matching cap right now, also got a complete gasket/headbolt kit. Really gettin antsy I wanted this thing going in time for summer, the turbo in my supra went out so totally roughin it with a honda with no AC in record breaking weather, man I cant wait to cruise this thing with tinted windows, AC, boomin system, and spool.

Yeah I know, I was on the fence about it but after seeing how 4th gear in this trans looks its kinda easier, but I hear good things about lower power levels on them, it could work :) Thanks for the props tho

This weeks update is a good one
First my dilema for the last few weeks
