I am in the process of putting a contract to have a house built in a new community. The house has an option for a detached 19x19 garage or expanded 21x21 for about 20k. Definitely not going with the builder on that. Question is how roughly expensive is it to have a 2 car garage built high enough to support a lift? Or should I shell out money to the builder?

Well I just went on their site and built a 20x21x9 building with 2 9x8 roll up doors and 1 standard entry door and it came to $5600 shipped/installed. But you'll also need concrete work done, which for a 20x21 will probably be about $2000, another $1000 or so in electrical work.

You also need to find out what entails the 20K includes, is that finshed drywall, insulated, electrical work, electric garage door opener etc etc.

The metal building will definitely be cheaper to just throw up, but it won't be insulated, or finished inside, it will just be metal walls, if you want to insulate it and finish it with drywall, that will of course add cost, you'll also have to pay to have the electrical work done, manual roll up doors, etc etc.

Yea, steel sheds are the way to go. I got a good deal actually(menards kit and well priced construction/concrete company). 2 doors but only 7ft high(maybe 7.5ft) and 8 ft wide. 24x30 and after it was all said and done im over 15k. I did the wiring myself so saved maybe 500 bucks, idk. And i dont have NEARLY the headroom you got in your shop. Soon as i have my new house built out on a piece of land im def going with a steel/pole barn type. 40x60 should do it. Gotta get a tractor too!

Just finished installing my 20" ventilation fan today. With the bay doors closed and just my entry way door open I can feel a slight breeze inside, immediately made a huge difference, very happy with my results.

Put it on a programmable timer so I can have it come on for a few minutes every hour during the day to keep the temps down, and the switch is for high and low speeds.

Started to hang my insulation/radiant barrier. I don't expect it to work miracles, but I do hope that it will help a bit. We struggled for a while to find the best/most efficient way to hang it, after a bit of headache we came up with a method that seemed to work pretty well.

Tape all 3 4ft wide sections to make 1 12ft tall section cut to the length of the wall, roll it up and just unroll it across the wall.

I'm sure the roof will be an absolute nightmare, but it is what it is haha.

Also installed one of my 2 PTAC's that I got for free, I hope between the both of them it should do a decent job at cooling, they are older units so they only put out about 7000 BTU's a piece, I'm looking to upgrade them to 15,000 BTU units in the future, but for the time being they will work.

Looking good! Currently looking into a home in my area with a half acre and the possibility of building a nice sized shop in the future. Hoping it works out, going to look at it today (crossing fingers)

Getting there....slowly but surely.

Just have to do the back wall and the roof now.

Finally finished up with the far wall. I can't get any extra hands for a few weeks to do the roof as my lift is booked up with repairs for the next few weekends, so I got to clean up the shop a little. It's been killing me how messy it has been.

I already cut in the other wall sleve for my 2nd PTAC but seeing as I don't have it in my possession yet I figured I wouldn't bother cutting it out so that's why part of the insulation is all wavy.

This job has definitely been way more work than I expected, but I think for 2 first timers, it came out pretty well.

Ready to finally start being able to hang my cabinets, shelving, peg board, TV, speakers, etc etc haha.

Also got to do some modification to a really nice car yesterday. Glad my friends have cars like this, lord knows I'll probably never afford one haha.

Great garage man! What kind of power are you running to it? Are you going to have 3 phase for a milling machine/lathe? or are you going to stick with single phase 220V?

Thanks!

Unfortunately 3 phase is not available in my subdivision so just single phase 220.

Right now I just have a 60amp sub-feed from the house, but if I keep going at this rate I may need to move to a 100-150amp service.

Though since it's just my personal garage in not usually running multiple pieces of equipment at a time.

Right now it works, I'll revisit if I start having issues popping breakers haha.

Been a while since I've updated this, the insulation install has been a long, drawn out process but it's finally done.

I definitely bit off more than I could chew with this project, I didn't think it would be too difficult in the beginning, boy was I wrong. But we still managed to get it done, it's not perfect everywhere, but it turned out pretty good for a bunch of amateurs haha.

The real reward is that it actually works! Prior to the insulation on a 90* day I'd see temps anywhere from 110-115* inside the shop, now with the insulation on the same 90* day I see temps no higher than 93-94, and that's with all the doors closed and just my ventilation fan running.

It felt really good to take apart the scaffold I will tell you that much. Now I can move onto the other list of projects that I've been dying to start.

Wow! That reflective bubble wrap stuff made that big of a difference?
I was just going to go with rigid foam board screwed to the ceiling and had thought about the bubble stuff under the metal roof but didn't know if it would do much. Sounds like it will be worth buying.
I'm doing my garage right now. A metal roof pole barn with framed in walls for house siding. 24x32 with a lean to along the side for the yard stuff.

btw I'm jealous of the lift. It's on my list of "gonna get that".

Looks great.

Thanks man.

I was undecided with the foam board, I felt like it would be easy to install, but I wouldn't want to use it without finishing it with plywood or drywall or something.

I think part of why my bubble wrap is making such a big difference is how much air space is behind it, especially the ceiling, there is a solid 18-24 inches of airspace between the foil and the gable area of the roof, according to the internet, 1 inch of stagnant air has an R value of 1, R18-R24 in the roof area is definitely helping me out. (If that statement is even accurate, it's just what I've read.)

I don't think you'd see the same results with " standard " reflective insulation installation, which is usually put on during construction, and has very little air between it, and the metal, I'm sure it still helps, but I don't think it would have the same results (hence why most people use it to compliment with other methods of insulation)

Good luck, I'm loving every minute I spend in mine!
