I'm going to be switching to a Hyundai valve cover and wanted new fasteners, so I did some research and figured I would share it. The part numbers for the Elantra I got from evilgsx4202r on dsmtalk.

So you have the option to either use bolts or studs. I will be using bolts. I also searched for aftermarket replacements for these bolts (called "shoulder bolts"), but could not find any with the right dimensions.

I am not sure why the valve cover gasksets are different, but it's unfortunate that the gasket meant for bolts costs twice as much as the one made for studs. If anyone knows the difference I would like to know. Hope this information helps someone!

This doesn't make me a pro but i'll answer only because i've done the swap myself. The Hyundai elantra valve cover has wider holes than the eclipse one does. So they used studs in order to fill that hole and match it with a corresponding valve cover gasket. Only the outer holes are different. I used bolts and a factory eclipse valve cover gasket and have no leaks. I've also seen on this site other people use the stock eclipse valve cover gasket with a high temperature sealant just to be on the safe side. The bolts i used were purchased at LOWES because Homedepot in miami claims they stopped selling metric bolts. You will here other sizes on this site but i know for sure they are. At least these are the one's i used.

Specifically:
Brand: HILLMAN
Bolt Size: (8) M6-1.0x40mm sku # 08236 72473 (4 pcs each pack) You just need (2) packs <-- these are only for the outer 8 stud holes on the elantra valve cover.
Washer size: #12 Flat washers stainless sku#08236 73619 (20 pcs each pack) You only need one pack and the rest can be used fo the other bolts if you wish.

Everything (Bolts and washers) cost me about $10 or less

Hope this helps someone. :thumb:

Just in case someone asks why i used #12 washers it's because i needed them wide enough to cover the stud holes evenly. The M6 washers wouldn't have worked because they weren't wide enough. Just a lil 411 :p

The Hyundai valve covers can actually use OEM Hyundai bolts OR studs (part numbers listed above). I want to purchase the correct fasteners for the job, not just generic metric bolts.

My question was about the difference between a 1992 Elantra gasket and a 1998 Sonata gasket, not comparing a DSM gasket.

I had to use the Hyundai bolts on mine. I tried using my Talon bolts but
the cover leaked. I'm using a Mitsu JDM cover now so I have a nice
"Mirror Blue" powdercoated Hyundai cover just laying around.

Greg

I'm gonna ask in here since it would be better for future references.

Where would i acquire the rubber o-rings for the Hyundai bolts pictured?

I already got the stock bolts but missing the o-rings, normal o-rings just split and fall off from the bolt.

The part number is in the first post. Any Hyundai dealership should be able to get them for you.

The part numbers listed are for the studs, are they the same for the bolts?

Last time i called they wanted me to buy the bolts for the o-rings, and a few searches reveal that the o-rings dont come with the bolts.

I just cant seem to cough up the dough for shipping of 1 o-ring. LOL

Although i may have to wait and see.

Nearest dealer is 45 miles away.

I found a solution that im gonna try and will let you guys know after i get my car going again but for now here is what i did.

I was rewiring a few things on my car and needed some wire grommets to protect the wires going threw the firewall, and while looking at different sizes i noticed they look very similar to the o-ring grommets from the dealer. from the way it looks it will be way better than the normal o-rings i was trying that would split.

Total cost $14.69 all from Home Depot.

Why do you need the rubber o-rings? I dont see a benefit.
Unless you are using it as a spacer?

The stock Hyundai bolts bottom out about 1/8th inch away from the cover, so yes the O-rings act as a spacer as well as a seal. Also makes it very hard to crack the valve cover.

Just ordered the hardware for the bolt option. Can't wait to install mine.
