Anyway so not sure if this is a problem, normal, or what. But 6 months ago when looking at the engine only the right side fan turned on to cool the car. It doesn't have any temp problems when driving. So I assumed they both kick on when it starts to over heat. But now 6 months later the right side doesn't even turn on....at least not that I've seen. Now its only the left fan that turns on to cool the car. Is this normal? Weird? Wiring problem? Or just a sensor problem?

The right one is the A/C fan.

Left fan (when looking at the engine bay) is triggered by coolant temperature sensor in bottom of radiator, only comes on when temperature is above 97 celsius, IIRC. However, it will not stay on all the time until the temperature drops below that threshold.

WTF is that a efficient way to use the fans instead of just one fan? In theory I can see why, and how that would help, but one big fan constantly cooling both seems to work fine for most cars.....unless our cars don't have a refrigerator unit

It is efficient for the system as it is designed. Aftermarket fans only tend to flow around 1200cfm, so you can generally run them all the time and still not overcool the coolant, where the stock passenger side cooling fan flows 1600cfm. The fan on the right will come on when you press the AC button due to the added heat from the AC condenser.

Good to know. More people should question seemingly simple things. Or read this since I didn't find anything related to this any where

Even some that have the AC removed still used the button to first push to get the yellow light, then flip the fan switch to first click will make both fans operate.

On a side note though: remove the AC fan when replacing the alternator. Makes the job tons easier.

That's a helpful tip. Thanks. And thanks to thomcasey, sordid and 1gdsm90. You've all been super helpful
