I had my alternator die on me the other day and replaced with another one to come to find out that one is dead as well.

After doing some research, i found out that the 96-98 galant 2.4L with an A/T alternators will put out 90a. I just wanted some feedback on this mod from people that have done this before or know more about it. I dont want a saturn alternator because i can get a galant alternator for 20 bucks new and I've heard from a few people that the battery and brake light will be on if I use the saturn alternator. Will the idiot lights be on if i can use the galant alternator?

I have a saturn alternator myself with none of the idiot lights on.

Anyways a galant alternator will drop right in and plug in just like a factory replacement, so no you shouldn't get the idiot lights.

This is good news for a lot of us, who are going to be replacing our alt. I'm assuming that 420a will take this alt

Thank you for the quick reply. I just needed some reassurance before doing this.

Just curious here, what do 2g cars have for alternator sizes? I know for 1gs, the n/t had a 65, turbos had 75, and all Canadian models had 90 amps.

If the Canadian model 2gs had larger alts that would be another option, but I have no clue if they do.

That's interesting to know that Canadian models have 90a. 2g cars I believe have 75a for alternators. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Also to add on to options, the 2g n/t spyders have 90a alternators as well.

I think you may want to make sure the alternators are the same. I know the galant one will bolt onto a 4g63 but have no idea about 420a's

I think you're right

The galant and 2g turbo and spyder 2.4 N/T use the same alternator with the difference being higher amp's on the Automatics. So bolting on a galant alternator shouldnt be a problem, aslong as its a 7th generation (92-96) galant.

no it actually it has to be 96-98 galant alternator (obd2). the 94-95 galants have 1g style alternator

Well i installed the galant alternator today and she works awesome! It is a complete drop in alternator for our 2g's. :hellyeah:

i got a 97 galant alternator 2.4l with an a/t and it works perfect. I got it from advance auto parts and I double checked with them that it showed up as 90a. I also checked with them to see if 96-98 galant alternators will work and they are all the same part number as the 97 one.

Canadian 2gs are 90a I bought one for my car. Don't know if the galant alt is any cheaper though

97 Galant Alternator works great. Fits right up, with one caveat: the wire harness mount is missing on the Galant's. No more interior lights dimming under idle.

420As use a 90 Amp alternator standard.

Any news on the alternator?
Today I noticed my red top battery was boiling! So turns out my alternator is overcharging.
I will be getting a new Red Top battery, and was interested in getting a higher amp alternator. Looks like this Galant will be the best option.
Recap:
So it needs to be a 1996-1998 Galant 2.4L A/T
Also is any rewiring needed for the extra amperage or can I just install it and everything will be good to go?

I did this swap on my spyder(turbo) because the stock one toke a dump one me and it looked nasty too, so got a 97 galant A/T and its pretty sweet. im thinking of getting it rebuilt for 100% max performance but that's later on

It installs just like the stock one, you don't have to change anything. I have been running one in my car for a few years now and haven't had any problems.

sorry to bring up an old thread, but my alt just took a dump on me and I seen some one mention 420a alts.
wondering are they the same as the 1galts? as in same style bolt right up? I have nothing but 420a's in the local wrecking yards (littlerly piled with them) and want to stock up/rebuild a few for spares.
1g's and 2g's are different alts
96-98 2.4l a/t galants are also direct swaps for 2g's?(Manuals?)
420a's??

Just want this info clarified because there with out a doubt someone else thats going to come along with the same question so its good to have this info handy if they use the search function.
