Rathdrum, Idaho
hello all, names henry.

i bought this talon tsi awd 5 speed on January first of 2012 for $450. the car was listed at 1k, and after talking with the kid for an hour or so about cars and shooting the breeze, he offered it too me for 450. needless to say, i jumped on it.

ive always wanted one of these cars, but never had the money to get one. right time, right place i guess.

as the car sat, it had a botched timing belt job, bent valves, shot wheels and tires and a rebuilt title. i wasnt wild about the title, but at least it was legal. it also had some minor front end damage from either a deer or a romp in the ditch. i got all new (ie- used) front body parts from my local PullnSave auto yard, of a plymouth lazer: R&L fender, hood and DS door. now i will have a straight body essentially to work with.

as far as the drivetrain went, i was complete, stock and in ok shape. i got the best stock combo i could, i believe. 5 speed, 4 bolt rear and a 6 bolt.

as for right now, the plan is to get it running in stock form and make sure the rest of the car is solid. its got a good interior in it and is alltogether a pretty solid setup. later on, i have a 2.4 build planned with a GM8 turbo, cyclone manifold and 2g head, for basically a big torque street brawler.

so now, onto the pics, and ill try and keep updated as much as possible. the motor should be done soon, and with some finances heading my way i will be ordering all the other parts i need soon.

Looks like you are well on your way! Good luck with the build.

recently, i was at the pull n save helping some freinds pull a transmission for a pickup, when i waltzed by a 95 elantra. popped the hood, voila, hyundai DOHC cyl head.

picked up that and the intake manifold for 40 bux, looked pretty fresh, ###### had about 5k miles on it. i freshened that up, polished the valves, cleaned it all really well and had it milled. both my 1g and 2g head need new valve guides, so this was a very cheap alternative.

polished the crank, cleaned up this pistons, honed the block, cleaned and flowed the injectors and cleaned/painted everything at my summer hi-perf/dyno class and shes now ready for assembly.

my parts too order will all come in a month or so, and this is what it entails (all prices are rounded up to around even):

t-belt/BSE kit w/ gates belt: $350
ARP head studs: $90
rings/bearings: $90
3g lifters: $165
silicone rad/heater hoses: $100
plugs/wires: $65
prothane motor mount inserts: $80
symborski shift kit: $40
TB shaft seals: $12

i still need to get:
LICP that works with the dejon tool UICP and SMIC i found.
Non-ABS prop valve and brake lines
rear AWD struts
ball joints/tie rods all around
battery relocation kit
alternator relocation kit (used, or home made)
clutch kit
VCE so i can throw it on our school dyno when im done

my buddy has a 1g honeywell intercooler core and end tanks, virgin, that i want to pick up. (these were what garrett used back in the day, and had less than 1 psi of drop across them, with excellent thermal dissipation.

i also plan on doing a de-powered rack (will fit well with my factory no-power-steering 87 toyota pickup and 89 nissan sentra), ac delete, abs delete and alt relocation (pretty obvious i guess, denoting the parts list). i want to do a custom bumper exit exhaust (i know, not legal) that incorporates a turbo style muffler for sound and a long resonated tip with a passenger side exit, but that might have to wait till i build the 2.4 and put the fmic on.

alot of the parts i pick up are second hand, and one day i plan to put together a price list of what ive spent on this and all my other projects.

stay tuned!

heres some pics of a few things ive gotten done. cyl head is milled and mostly assembled, milled down rear balance shaft (same as AMS BSE kit) and a few shots comparing combustion chambers on the 1g and hyundai head

Enjoy!

just put in a parts order with stm and a few other random ones. heres the list, should be here in a week or so:

from stm:
timing belt kit with BSE kit and gates blue belt
6 bolt arp head studs
prothane motor mount inserts
shifter bearing kit
gates water pump

from other places:
symborski shift kit
revised topline lifters
acl bearings
npr rings
silicone radiator hose kit
f1 racing stage two clutch kit

i know i may get flack for the clutch kit, but ive had great luck with all the stage two f1 clutches ive used, and this wont be a high hp build as of now.

only thing left is to finish depowering the rack, delete the abs and assemble the motor and install. hopefully all goes well!

ill post some pics when parts come in and i finish things up!

took all the rotors in and had them turned at my school, took the flywheel to get machined, finished up the depowered rack, got some used inner fenderwells and all the non abs stuff at pullnsave.

the non abs brake stuff is all installed but im waiting to hook it all up so i can purge and bleed the lines properly. after i took the rotors off i decided i might as well refurbish all the calipers while i was at it.

in the process of doing this, i noticed my front wheel bearings were pretty ragged. then noticed the rear were...almost non existant. since they are kinda necessary, ill be doing all the bearings as well.

ill get the bearings installed with cleaned knuckles, refurbished calipers, turned rotors and a fresh brake fluid flush, then start on the engine assembly.

and now onto some great pictures, ### thats what everyones here for!

the list of stuff is in previous posts. just waiting on my TB rebuild kit and some more fundage to get the wheel bearing kits from JNZ. in the mean time ill start cleaning the engine bay and prepping for some paint, then put the engine together and back in the car.

eventually want to get a trans rebuild kit so i can do a in house trans redo on my extra trans (double syncros, evo gears etc.)

picked these up the other day, traded my expo trans and xfer case for them. not the best in the world, but i wasnt using the trans anyway. theyre very lightly used, no wear really.

still working on everything else. just started two new jobs, and full time school, but im trying to make time to get some major work done of this thing!

Looks like you have a lot on your plate. Project is looking nice and seems as though you snagged a nice deal with the seats.

thanks mishi!

got some done today before i helped the gf move. got my TB rebuild kit the other day (thanks brian!) complete with mil.spec seals, so i did that real quick the other night (sorry i didnt get process pics!). it went very smoothly, and im glad i did it ahead of time, my stock seals were completely shot, cracked and falling apart. if you need to do TB seals, i highly recommend snowborder714's kit. great quality and awesome hardware.

and today, after doing some shop clean-up and organization, i did the D/S motor mount mod. was pretty easy, just cut the wrap around off, cut a plate of steel out to fit, and weld on.

also, found out that my "14b" is actually a legit, recently rebuilt, MHI small 16g! thanks to the What Turbo is this? [Merged] Turbo ID Identification for spurring me to re-check it! on to the pics! :D

well its been a couple weeks, and ive been doing what i can on the car, just so busy working its been hard to get an update it! (i actually am writing this, sitting in bed haha)

so ive gotten all the wheel bearings torn apart, and every single one was shot. the left rear was the worst, and ill have to replace the stub shaft in it. the bearing apparently siezed and spun on the stub shaft, cutting approx. 1/16th into the shaft.

a freind traded me some stuff, including a stub shaft from his 3 bolt. hopefully its the same splines and the cup fits on it.

i also did the DS motor mount mod, and got my new radiator core support welded in as well. i also was given (yes, given, i was puzzled as well WTF) another set of 17" riax rims with some tires from my buddy. they arent perfect, some curb rash and the tires will need replaced soon, but i figured i could use them as winter wheels or trading ammo!

ive also been trading around for other things, ended up trading my m62 supercharger for a very good condition hx50 turbo. no shaft play whatsoever, just needs cleaned good!

im still trying to get time to assemble the motor, so hopefully i will get some holiday time to do that!

anyway, on to the pics for now!

Looking good. What are you planning to fill the mount with?

well ive finally had a bit of time to do some work on this thing! got the engine started, got it assembled today up to the cylinder head, and all my bearing specs came in great, as well as piston ring gaps!

i ported my OFH, and was going to do the head port mod #2 but it appears with the hyundai/1g head you dont have to drill out the hole as they are already .5" and the ARP studs are only .468" roughly. should be plenty of clearance!

the only thing i may be worried about is the OFH, i think i may have over dont the porting on it, so if someone can take a peak at my pictures for it, id appreciate some feedback. just planning on getting the engine finished up and maybe install it when its ready. i still need to get enough spare cash to buy my wheel bearings, and id like to get the trans and x-fer case steam cleaned and painted. past that i still just need a hard LICP, some stock seat slider brackets and some fluids and i should be able to run her.

ive also been doing a lot of research on my future plans for the car, they have changed a bit, but it should still be a fun car at the end result.

edit: got the lifters cleaned and bled twice, cams installed with the rest of the valve train. oil clearance came in pretty titties for them as well, between .0026-0030" on all. need to fix a bolt for the water pump, it interferes with the t-belt tensioner. going to try to finish up assembly over the next couple weeks, and im picking up a spare OFH from a buddy. hoping to have this car wrapped up by mid-late spring!

onto the pictures!

well i havent updated in the past couple weeks, just been slow going. too much school and work to get a couple spare hours of wrench time.

got a couple small parts in: b/s sprocket delete spacer, timing belt tensioner pulley special tool and a set of clear corner lights.

since i got the one piece i was waiting on to do the t-belt, i got that all set up (did it twice for the practice) having a beam style tq wrench helped with the special tool.

after i got that installed with all new oem components and the gates kevlar belt (sexy), i went ahead and installed the intake manifold and test fitted the valve cover, front timing cover and exhaust manifold.

also, once i get the front body panels back on, i need to remember to re-polish my headlights VERY bad. the corners make them look like sheet.

onto the pics!

Very nice, clean build you have going on here, and you can't beat the start price on the project! Good pick-up especially for the 6/4 bolt. I know you asked quite a while ago but I think the OFH looks fine, mine is actually ported more then that and my pressures are still higher then they should be, but I also use a heavier weight oil (Brad Penn 15w40). Keep up the good work and get another update in here!

its been slow going. moneys been tight, time is a premium and school and work have been kickin my ass.

i have done a few things, but not much.

putting 2g seat belts in, cleaned the inside a bit, got the trans cleaned and painted, ordered my cheap struts and am getting the springs swapped on this next week.

i havent been able to order my damn wheel bearings (no money) and idk when ill be able to do that. gonna try and save money over the next few weeks and hopefully i can come up with some scratch.

past that its just been lookin at it alot and imagining, hoping, wishing...

ill get some new pics up soon as well.

thanks for the interest!

well its been a while since an update!

got 90% of my parts ordered and have been putting stuff together for a while.

did the wheel bearings, suspension and a few other things, seat belts are still in the middle of fabrication.

i started another high performance/dyno tuning class this summer, so it has afforded me alot of time to assemble this thing. also the job has improved so money in equals parts in.

since the class started, ive rebuilt another 14b turbo, cleaned a bunch of stuff and done the brakes, all new calipers etc. i did all ebc rotors for the outlander. this turned out to be a mistake, as the rears needed some tweeking to work on the dsm. turns out they are the same diameter, but the hat is deeper by about 10mm or 3/8", so a spacer on the back side is needed.

i had the machine shop at the school mod some spacer i picked up. heres some pics of the latest and the outlander brake upgrade/differences and mods needed.

more to come in the near future!

got some more done on the car.

dynamatted most of the interior, just a few small spots and dynataping to finish. also did the symborski shifter base bushings, rebuilt my 14b, ported one of my 1g manifolds and 7cm turbine housings a bit.

the rear brake pads that came with my calipers are the wrong ones (somehow), so waiting to get new ones. brakes are done, save bench bleeding the master, and adding the RRE stainless braided lines so i can bleed the whole system.

once thats done, its time to reinstall the interior and the motor/drivetrain.

one problem i have run into is the ebrake cables dont seem to want to bolt to the calipers anymore. if nothing else, i can always make some new brackets.

onto the pics!

got some more done today, lot of prep work and buttoning up the dynamat. painted the exh. manifold, turbine housing, removed broken bolt from turbine housing ( LOTS of drilling, pounding and frusteration... ) and ported/ cleaned up my punishment racing o2 housing.

i was actually kinda upset with how much material i had to remove and smooth out on the PRo2...granted i got it second-hand-new, but this thing needed a fair amount of work to be acceptable for what theyd charge new. lots of extra pipe overlap, rough/sharp edges and welding slag all over. took a good hour to port and smooth everything out, but it looks good now, is really smooth, and i only paid 100 for it brand new.

pics!
(ps- sorry for the bad pic quality, shaky hands and a cell phone = bad mix!)

got some more stuff done this week

motor is back in, just need to tighten all the mounts up. installed my aeromotive stealth 340 pump, cleaned up some of the wiring under-hood, got the battery relocation almost finished (box installed), and finished one seat bracket completely for my tenzo seats.

also took some time to clean/paint some wheels for my mazda mx3, got tired of 14 in wheels/tires.

hoping to get everything hooked up and plugged in, as well as most of the interior installed this next week. pics!
