I know someone with an Eagle Talon that's got problems, but he's willing to sell me the car for $200. It has 200,000 miles and engine runs but loses oil but not sure how it loses oil. The engine is a 2.0 DOHC with an automatic transmission. The major problem is that it won't go in reverse. Makes grinding noises when it's in reverse and drive is delayed by a few seconds.

I'm thinking of getting this car and repairing it. Is the transmission going to need a rebuild or is it something simple to fix? I don't mind if I need to replace a solenoid or valve body so long as it doesn't require me to remove the transmission.

The car looks good and moves forward just fine otherwise.

Won't know until you look deeply into it. Nobody can tell you if it needs to be rebuilt or just a simple fix by your "grinding noises in reverse".
For $200, you could more than make your money back even parting it out if it turns out to be a total unreasonable fix for your budget. Just do it (make sure your title transfer is proper and all that jazz)

For the money you can't beat it. But more than likley it willreplaced or rebuilt. I would also look into the oil leak issue.

But with that said you can buy the car for 200. Buy a trans for 600.00 and a motor for 6-800 and still be way under what you could sell it for.

Even if you go to the junkyard and swap it out your only looking at another 100.00. Sounds like a good deal to me. I also agree with the oil leak, clean off the engine bay real god then start the car and youll see where the leak is comimg from. But if its more then you want to deal with just part it out and at least double your money !

Depending on what year talon you have the chance to buy, you can get your money back by selling the front bumper in mediocre condition (97-98), if that tells you anything.

I'm not saying a talon is a gold mine, but since much less talons were sold than eclipses, a few parts of the car go for serious bucks in the dsm community. Front end conversions, rear end conversions, twisty side skirts, door strakes, "thong spoilers"... different gens had different options on both cars that can be swapped out almost painlessly. Depending on the year and options, if any at all, you could make your money back on one or two exterior parts.

But with 200k and tranny problems, I wouldn't bother with it unless it had known valuable/working parts on it, or, unless you wanted to bust a lot of knuckles getting it back on the road.

A rebuilt transmission for that is super easy to find. If the car is in good shape, it would be a real comfortable and nice handling daily driver/grocery getter. For $200 bucks, you're buying a lot of steel, worth it and like previously stated, would have purchased yesterday.

Indeed, you'd earn more knowledge by disassembling a $200 car than $200 worth of paid instruction from an educational institution could provide you with.

Stop thinking and go do it.
