okay guys looking for some pointers on oil consumption issue. to start off this is NOT a 4g63T engine but a n/t 4G64, which was on its way to becoming turbod untill I ran into a possible rebuild issue. engine has absoulutely no external leaks. cars burning give or take 1/4 quart of oil in a weeks time driving around town everyday. compression test numbers couldnt be better. through a leak down test everything appears to be fine besides some small amount of air coming through the dipstick tube and oil fill cap which i know means piston rings...but car does not have any smoke upon initial start up, or after warmed up at any time durring idle. dont see smoke in drive either. i start to notice that i can smell oil durring heavy acceleration from the engine bay, so today I popped the hood and reved the engine manualy opening the TB. blue smoke starts to appear in the exhaust area and a much bigger puff of blue smoke when I let off the throttle. already planning on a rebuild, but would still like to get an idea of exactly how its burning oil. also the valve cover gasket, along with the spark plug gaskets along with my PCV valve were repalced 6 months ago right when I bought the car. is there anything else I can check ? Its hard to say, but I dont think I have any cracks in the exhaust, even though its the rusty one from the factory. thanks in advance.

forgot to mention this engine has 113,000 miles. I just got done checking the intake pipe along with looking down the throttle body with it open too see if any excessive oil was coming through the pcv, everything looks dry. pcv rattles, seems to work. i've read over and over that with doing a compression test that if your numbers are low, or a single cylinder thats low, that if you add oil and compression goes up, your rings are bad. but what if your numbers were already good? would it still go up? and if not does that take rings out of the equation?

The point of adding oil during a compression test is to help temporarily seal the rings. If you have a cylinder that's lower than the others, you add oil, and the test comes back much higher, the issue is probably rings. However, the oil alone will also make your compression test higher regardless so it's not 100% full-proof.

Yep, valve stem seals, and even worn guides are the first area where oil will slide by..and you don't have to see blue smoke at idle.

But, where you had smoke on de-acceleration is a given sign that guide seals and/or guides are definitely bad since the sudden closing of the throttle plate creates a heavy vacuum in the cylinders to pull oil past the seals/guides and get burnt off.

And, with you getting blue out the tail pipe on high acceleration definitely shows oil rings are definitely tired, even if the compression numbers are good.

Motor wasn't well taken care of if you're already pushing oil past the oil rings.
You got some motor work ahead of you before you even think of doing a turbo conversion.
