Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the site but have owned an Eagle Talon Tsi since 1996. My original has been gone a long time but I bought another a few years ago for sentimental reasons. At the time of purchase the car ran terrific (was owned by a racing mechanic) and was well maintained. About two years ago it had a hose (coolant) bust and it's been sitting around waiting for repair. I recently had it repaired. (Long story why it took so long but due to personal reasons it just couldn't get done.) Now that the car is "running" the car sputters endlessly and I can't seem to get the rpms even above 4k without seriously misfiring - the turbo also sputters and doesn't engage smoothly. The Idle is horrible and runs extremely rough. This thing runs horrific at this moment and will die if left in idle.

A mechanic friend told me to literally drive it up and down the coast (40 miles one way) and "clear the system out." I have driven it around a bit but not continuously for an extended period of time.

I'm a bit hesitant to do this as the car may just end up dying on the road but I have taken it around the block on the expressway. I can get it up to speed but whenever i hit the gas it sputters and chokes like mad- I ease off let it get to the proper speed and it will hold. This car is a 1991 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD turbo.

Thanks for any advice you have.

Thanks a lot!

Andrew

Take the I.S.C off, and test it to see if it works, and then clean any traces of carbon off of it.
also test the T.P.S, and the coolant temp sensor.
inspect the mas air sensor.

crack open the ecu, and check for any obvious melting caps, or weird burnt electronic smells.
Inspect all under hood engine sensors, [and their wire connectors] for wear damage or corrosion
Also [if you have the means] I highly recommend you do a boost leak test, and inspect all your vacuum lines for any damage.

First and foremost. Is there any CEL's on? If so have them scanned at Oreilly Autozone NAPA etc to see what they are reading. If it is a P0300 then it would be a random misfire. Check for spark by taking the plug wires off one at a time and attach the plug to the plug, then have someone crank the engine over and do this for all 4cyls. This could be anything from listed above by mitsukid or a coil pack, cam sensor, crank sensor, power transistor, bad plugs, plug wire, low compression etc etc. Have someone scan the obd codes first then start from there.

...Notice that the ops car is a 1991 dsm, so it should be an obd 1 car, so the codes are not gonna be the same as the 2g obd 2 cars...
most autoparts stores wont have the proper tool to check the codes on an obd 1 car.

To get the codes out of a 1g you need to ether get an analog ohm meter hooked up to the obd 1 port, and then count the sweeps like in the haynes manual.
Or some tuners on here have rigged up led bulbs or buzzers from radioshack see links below.

if you have dsmlink it will be able to tell you if there are any check engine codes under D.T.C

Ya, gas has gone to varnish and picked up what have you just resting in the tank.
Might have to drain the tank, flush it around with kerosene to rid of the junk, then refill....and change the fuel filter, clean out the injectors, do an oil change (which that prob has gone to sludge and picked up what have you) and filter, then report back to us.

Hi Guys,

Okay I've been over-run with work so I had to put the Talon on the back burner. My mechanic friend told me to at least drive it for a few hours to see if it clears up. he also told me to fill the tank half way and put in lucas fuel treatment.

It didn't seem to help. I, however, can describe the problems to you very clearly now after driving the sucker for a long time.

As long as I don't engage the turbo the car runs smooth (except in idle). Once I kick in the turbo which can't be helped at start or uphill (7psi+) the engine goes nuts and hiccups over and over (sputters) until the engine light kicks in or I back off. It won't let me get past 7 psi. The CEL only comes on when I try to push the car (gas petal above 7psi) and I have to back off. Once im at speed say 50 mph - as long as I don't engage the turbo the car runs smooth. The more I gas the more it goes haywire.

Sorry no way to wash out that gas tank. I will go ahead and change the fuel filter and spark plugs. Hopefully the wires are good but I'll have to test things one at a time.

Mitsubishikid, I can already see you are WAY above my head with your knowledge. I'm pretty clueless to what you are saying although I use to have old DSM friends that would hook up their laptops to their dsms to check things. I smell a strong smell of gas, maybe my car is running totoo rich? Regardless I am pretty useless and those friends are loooong gone so I'm on my own and may just bring this puppy in to a shop if worse comes to worst.

Thanks again for all your time. I will be coming back to let you know what I've done.
