I have a question that everyone seems to have a different answer to. I have an evo3 big 16g. I currently have the turbo removed and was planning on rebuilding it. I had the axial (side to side) shaft play measured and it was 12 thousandths of an inch. Obviously there is no oil in it so I expected some, but it feels excessive to me. G-pop shop told me they need rebuilt around 18-20 thousandths shaft play, which seems crazy to me I think if was that bad it would be hitting the housing, and yet some say it should have no shaft play side to side. If anyone actually has any real knowledge of this please feel free to comment. Thanks.

That's within an acceptable tolerance, but if you're planning to rebuild it anyway you may as well proceed with the service. Check the shaft for grooving, and be sure to do all the necessary cleanup to make sure the new sealing rings can do their job.

Thanks that's all I needed to know and I trust your knowledge because I've heard a lot about you on here.

Make sure there is NO in/out play. Any in/out can mean disaster and it can go from a little in/out play to a lot real quick. :|
