Ive been searching for a new suspension for my 91 tsi, and besides coilovers everyone says go for the Koni yellows. My question is do you guys typicaly run stock springs with those Koni's or is there an option to get a shorter shaft? Running lowered springs on stock length shocks is wrong, and all the posts about springs falling off of the perches proves it. Im actually very surprised about the lack of suspension options in the DSM world. I have read the 2g rear Koni yellows are somewhat shorter but I think only an inch, and there are no 1" drop springs that ive found so far so while it helps its still not enough. Are high dollar coilovers the only option?

For the front Koni inserts, you can chop off the threaded part at the bottom and weld it to the housing instead of using a bolt. There was some sort of writeup on RRE's website a while ago, but I can't find it anymore. I think you can have Koni's modified to get the shafts shortened, but not 100% sure.

I don't think many, if any run stock springs with Konis. Most will run a lowering spring, like Eibach Prokits, or similar.

You can also opt for a Ground Control spring kit or go with Hypercoil and piece together your own.

I went with GC and am very happy with the ride quality and handling.

I cut half the threaded portion off on the bottom of the front inserts and still had plenty of thread engagement to bolt it. (Had to cut the bolt shorter too.) I think it lowered it 5/8" more up front so I would have decent shock travel without bottoming out the GC collar.

I don't think I'd want to weld it to the housing...
