1990 tsi AWD. Replacing motor and trans. Motor from a 91 Fwd turbo trans from a 91 AWD. I do have the necessary components for the spline differences.

Went to place the trans on and it wouldn't slide on all the way. Come to find there is a stud in the block and trans, one of them shouldn't be there.

My old trans has the stud but the block does not.

Do the fwd blocks have this stud or is it something the machine shop might have done?

Which one to remove and how?

Any replies are appreciated. Thanks!

It's the same dowel. That is, both the tranny and the block are machined to accept one half of the dowel. Simply remove one (doesn't matter which) and you're good to go. By the way, a bolt goes through the centre of that dowel and threads from the block side into the tranny.

Not that dowel. The one that threads into the transmission is on the firewall side of the block, not near the radiator. ;)

Are the dowels threaded or can I punch it out?
Not threaded; they should just slip out but may require a little bit of convincing.

Got it out. You guys rock, thanks!

Trans stud came out easiest.

Yup, you're correct. I got a bit lazy and just took a quick look at the pic.
