Been googling and looking through the forums a bit looking for information about a non-turbo (f5m22 i think) transmission rebuild for my 94 talon. I, for the life of me, can't seem to find anything about non-turbo dsm transmissions. I looked around jacks, and shep, but all of the options they have are for turbo trans...

I'm pretty sure I'll need a rebuild soon as the car is leaking out from the trans and the gears are starting to grind as I'm shifting. But I'm not a car guy and with college getting ready to start back up and being fall semester I need my car to get back and forth to class, as i've been relying on my motorcycle as my DD all summer.I'd attempt to do it myself, as long as I could find a step by step guide with an experienced personal mechanic I'm sure the two of us would be able to figure it out, since I have a spare non working transmission that broke last year..

If anyone could point me in the direction of how to go about getting a rebuild, either from a specialized place; or the other option, that would be appreciated. Or if I'm just S.O.L, just let me know.

Wish I would have known there were a crap load more support for turbo's vs n/t when I bought the car...><

i would check clutch to my n/a started grinding to and it was a leaky master witch toasted the syncros. i loved my n/a but there is not as much for them.

If it's the 1.8 you have an f5m22

If all gears are grinding you likely have a clutch issue. Jack's has a great video on clutch adjustment. Also make sure you're full on gear oil. You might throw some thicker oil or synchro mesh in there.

I managed to find one at a junk yard for $150 and it worked great!

The rebuild kits are a little spendy and good luck trying to DIY. There's just too many parts! One thing incorrectly assembled and it could fail catastrophically.

See if you can find one at a junk yard with low miles. You might check bigger cities as those cars typically have lower miles. Sure it's a gamble but it's the option I'd take time and time again. It's just too complicated to do yourself ESPECIALLY where it'll be your dd for school.

I sold my POS 4g37 because it took too much maintainence and was no fun to drive. I kept replacing parts hoping that each fix would last for a while. It just. Kept. BREAKING!!! Full top end overhaul, all new belts and hoses, alternator, fuel pump, calipers, axels, radiator, wheel bearings, trans, tires, and the list goes on. I even painted the damn thing!!! And what the hell for? 90 something hp and almost nothing you can do about that?

Got my tsi AWD and never looking back. Wish I had put all that money into this car. :(

This depends on your skill level. If memory serves 1.8 is f5m21. 4g6 is f5m22.
I rebuild my own and I daily drive.

If in question have the pros build one quite cheap got mine done for less than 600 bucks it was turbo a while back with a year warranty.

The clutch is pretty new(exedy racing clutch) and this trans was from a junkyard with low miles(supposedly) off a 93 lazer.

As for gears grinding, its mostly from first to second grinding. It usually doesn't grind if I had first started it, then about 15-20 mins after driving 2nd gear starts to mess up. 5th gear as well if I'm shifting from 4th at interstate speed(passing someone). But I shall get the clutch and stuff looked at when my guy has the time as well.

I just want this baby to last me as a DD til I can drop 2k or so on a different dsm. I really want a gst spyder *swoons*
But until then at least I have my 500r to get me back and forth to class on non rainy days, and my talon to limp there on the bad ones!

Ya, do the proper clutch adjustment and things might work out.

But do think that 1st/2nd syncros are gone due to heavy shifting on a lightweight transmission along with failure to change tranny fluid on a regular basis-which is every 35 thousand miles.

To test (and I wouldn't be posting this to cause harm or damage, but use at your discretion...):, is to have the car in idle, foot off the clutch and lightly push the shifter to a forward gear. If resistance in the shifter is felt and idle speed drops slightly, the syncros are doing their job in slowing down the input shaft of the tranny.

But, if no resistance is felt and a sudden light grinding, the syncros are shot, plain and simple and a rebuild is in order.
