I know how to replace both belts but I'm not understanding something. Well my harmonic balancer broker off dangling, and I happen to take everything apart on the timing belt side and found that my balance shaft belt is still on but all the teeth are shredded like a flat belt, and my tensioner arm was reset all the way out and my tensioner puller came loose and cause the slack on the t-belt. but the when I TDC all that marks, everything is still align perfectly with the slack belt still on. The only mark that was off was the upper balance shaft sprocket.

Did I do any damage? Should I be good to replace and reinstall whatever it needs to get it back up and running?

replace whats broken did you start the car what kind of damage were you asking about. Any pics bs belt is torn, mines was somewhat shredded before I did my tb many years ago so im sure it was bad but no damage done.

I was thinking about bent valves or anything that can harm the motor by what has happend.

Imagin the bs belt without any teeth on the inside and flat both side. But the bs belt is still hanging in there pretty tight and also the bs upper sprocket is miss align maybe because of it having no teeth.

How can you tell if the tensioner arm is bad or the tension pulley?

Do you hear any noise in the pulley, tensioner arm is it leaking from the top that would be a sign I change my tensioner when in doubt just redid all my timing stuff a few hundred miles ago, so its fresh and pulleys while back just to be sure.

Kinda sounds like balance shaft seized. Explains missing teeth. Perhaps that somehow lead to stretching the timing belt causing tensioner to come all the way out and loose pulley?

The balance shaft or balance shaft belt ALONE won't cause you to bend valves. It's when that belt breaks and derails your timing belt.

Throw a new balance shaft and timing belt on there and see if it starts up. Compression test to confirm just in case you forgot to do something or have another problem causing a no start.

Remove the valve cover and check for play in rocker arms. I've heard of them coming off when the T belt breaks.

Sounds like something real nasty, had to fall in the way of the BS belt causing it to get super tight (ripping off the teeth of the belt), then with this tightness, causing the tension pulley to roll loose on the bolt stud, or the BS sprocket took a sudden stop from spinning at 8Krpms, which will do the same above belt damage.

If the timing belt is okey, the head is fine.

If it's the latter, that could do some damage the block - hope it didn't crack it.

Good luck = DSM
