What RPM do you shift at for engine longevity?

I can tell that I get the best economy shifting between 2 and 3 thousand in my non-turbo 4g63. This old guy in a skills center course I took when I was in my highschool years told me engines need to be put up in to the higher parts of the RPM band to burn out carbon buildups in the head assembly. I don't know if that applies to these engines but it's always made me question myself. So I'm asking here now.

I'm probably not going to get anybody to agree but all of my cars over the years see 6000 and likely 7000+ every single day. No exaggeration. Ive logged 400k miles in dsms and i do not baby them. I also only run synthetics and i am a synthetics advocate and my maintemance records are very complete and frequent. Thebonly bearing failures I ever had were a rear balance shaft (Not catastrophic) and I lost the original 14b at 60k on the very first dsm I had.

It totally depends on the person saying it. If you beat on it all the time and don't do all the required maintenance then you're going to have problems. This doesn't just go for dsm's. It's good to give the engine a good run. I daily my stock 98 tsi awd. I agree with Pauleyman.

Depending on the day/turbo.

14b I would shift between 2.5-3 to 3.5k rpm. Now that I have a 16g, my normal shifting is between 2-3k and when I'm driving a little more spirited, the rpms land between 3.5-4.5k. Boosting is a different story though LOL.

Mine at least sees 5.5-6k rpm once or twice a day. It also has 206k miles with original motor, so eh.

Edit: to clarify, "the day" I obviously rally it a little more during the evenings/cold mornings. The PNW air is extremely dense then ;)

Thanks for your input guys. I have a non-turbo, though. I'm hoping there's a select few DDers of them to give me some pointers.

Still the same concept though. 2-3k rpm shifting all the time is likely to build to deposits.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish here? If it's MPG then, lightend flywheel and clutch set up, coast for gas saving. There's a large thread about a guy doing a MPG saving thing but he's a fwd 4g63T but his information was for saving gas.

Not sure if this is true for NT 4g63 but our injectors cut off at 1500 or higher rpm when deceleration occurs from say 5th to 4th (or other gears) letting the engine help slow itself down. When I'm decelerating and then downshift from 5th to 4th or 3rd, 2nd (never from 2nd to 1st for slowing down, at least for me)I usually get -24 vacuum in Hg on my boost gauge.

When I had my 2G non-turbo (4G63) I found the best mileage and shifting operation to be between 1800-2300 RPM. Felt fairly easy on the engine and transmission. On my current 2G turbo (the gearing is different) I have to shift between 2000-2500 for best economy. But it feels a bit rougher on the engine sometimes as if I'm lugging it. But like the rest are saying, if it's maintained and treated with respect, it will last!

Also you may not remember me but I just want to say to you that I was not the guy who downvoted your comment on you-know-which-site. In fact there was nothing negative about my original comment and you seemed to freak out about it. So I upvoted you anyway and even sent you a PM to explain this and apologize just in case. It helps to not judge people too quickly :)
