ok so i started to over heat today and i figured it was probably my thermostat seeing as my water pump is brand new. so i toke the thermostat out and filled it back up and drove about 10 miles from my girlfriends house to my house and when i shut my car down i heard my coolant boiling (temp gauge dose not work)
my next idea is maybe my cap is bad. and will a 2g thermostat fit in a 1g

Start with the basics. Have/Did you bleed the system of air? Are the cooling fans working? Does the car overheat only at "idle" or "down the road"? How old is the (water pump/timing belt job)?

i would 1st try and get a temp gauge so you can see what your running at more info will help also do you have fan setup? how goods the radiator fins? maybe a blown headgasket? have you checked to see if the fans are turning on? i may be wrong but i dont believe itll fit

i havent noticed it over heating at ideal and last time i knew the fans were working both stock with stock radiator i have a small fmic and the radiator has a small hole in it that i crimped off but its been like that for over a month and no probs till resonantly

the water pump and timing belt was done about 3k ago

Have you took the radiator out, took it to a shop to have the corrosion boiled out that is massively plugging it up? (Or, you could have a crack in the HG causing the boilovers...

Bet if you do that, things will quiet down ... then you can put the T-stat back in since the system needs the coolant hot to make the motor run as its supposed to.

ok so i checked and my fan ar turning on with no prob at idle im at 202 degrees comming out of the water pump and 194 at the raidator...i drove home from school about 30miles and was fine then i drove to the mall about another 25 miles from my house left the mall went 6 miles down the road to the gas station and started to boil over as i pulled in and i had a trail of coolant going down the road i was driving on. im so lost i realy hope its not my head gasket im gonna do a compresion test on monday at school

Without a thermostat you can still overheat. The thermostat is there to regulate temperature, without it you can heat-soak your radiator and coolant, and continue to the path of overheating and boiling over.

Get a known good thermostat in there, and then try to track down your problem. Running with no thermostat is never the answer, only a band-aid. If your using one of those infrared temp guns to check your temps, i personally hold no faith in them. If nothing else i would get a cheap aftermarket temp gauge so you can truly know what your running at.

Well, its sounds alot like your head gasket is going bad, it went bad on me a couple of times on my other 1g dsms in the past, and usaly when the car keeps overheating after changing the thermal stat and coolant and the water pump is not leaking then its usaly the head gasket. That might not be what you want to here but thats what i think it is.

Before you go taking the head off and replacing the head gasket do the obvious. Get a working thermostat and put it in. Burp the system by leaving the radiator cap off, heat on high, and let it idle for about 15-20 minutes until it stops bubbling from the radiator cap. While doing this look in the radiator cap hole and check to make sure the coolant is flowing smoothly. You could have a clogged radiator or something of that nature. If you run with no thermostat its possible the coolant has no chance to get cooled in the radiator and is moving through the engine too fast and too hot.

i agree with crazyquik also another thing do you have a stock or afftermarket cap whats the psi rating on it? do a compression test and let us know how everything goes but if your pouring coolant out its coming from somewhere did you get out and look where it was from? that would be a very simple indincation of whats generally happeneing here if it comes from the head or the back of the motor head gasket keep us updated

well after everything i finally got a head gasket kit and new studs and im just got back in from ripping everything apart still gotta take the intake mani off any help on getting it off would be great and thanks for all the help so far guys... also thinking about getting another waterpump sense its udder warranty still

Thing about overheating is where you got the license plate mounted. If it's in the air intake area, it's acting like a big air dam pushing away the air to go through the radiator and I'll guarantee you'll have a good boilover.

Is the water pump and OE or aftermarket? I know it doesn't happen often but the pump you put in could be bad.

-rad cap
-new thermostat
-flush/bleed the system
-check for leaks
-compression test
-all of that before the head gasket. You said there was a trail of coolant down the road = leaking somewhere!! I don't want to be hard on you but, if the head gasket blew on you is because of negligence, I never ever in my life drive a car that is overheating especially with a broken temp gauge.

how abouth ignition timing ?

how abouth ignition timing ?

What about ignition timing? You say that advancing or retarding the ignition timing will cause the car to overheat?

The OP needed to look for leaks first...If its not broken don't fix it. There is a chance the overheating continues even after the new head gasket. I say this because what was causing the leak could have been something simple like a hose, remember there are hoses going to the heater core/TB/and oil cooler, and of course radiator :p

i had a similar problem before and i guess what? timing was off

ok i got the head gasket put in everything is back together. the car starts and idles better than it did before but i have no throttle response and my check engine light is on from what i can see everything is pluged and and where it should be. any ideas?

I pluged a modis to it my knock sensor was pluged in wrong and my terminal 3 wire from the coil harnes to the ecu needed to be replaiced and I had a lose conection that was only makin it running on cyl1 and cyl4 but its all good know I just got some vacuum lines to fix...thanks guys for all the help
