Ok, well i just bought a talon tsi for 1g with a rebuild motor. It is running at this time but not drivable, needs clutch and brake bleed. The owner told me he used a 93 harness for it and got it to start. The tach is not working and the ignition isn't sending power to starter to start the car thus having to jump start it. I wonder if this is because of the 93 harness and does it have to do with the coil pack? thanks

The 90's model was the only year that the tach got the signal from the coil. If you have a different year harness you can try following this guide to fix it. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-electrical-wiring/414636-how-fix-1990-dsm-tach.html

You also say that you must jump start your car. If your car starts with the power of another car and won't with just your battery it is probably your battery. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/new...reeway-electrical-problems.html#post151165661

I'll try fixing the tach. If it don't work and if i put in a tach would i need the coil pack? ahah nvm ill search that site.
And for the jump start, i should've been more specific with that. But meaning i have to take a wire and manually connect it from the battery to the starter while the key is turned on for it to start. ?? should i double check the wirings or is there something about the coil pack.

Sounds like a starter solenoid/relay. Had to do that same thing with my bike a couple years ago, but I jumped from one side of the relay to the other for the same effect. Check all your connections to your starter and you could try hitting it with a rubber mallet while a friend is turning the key (no joke).

Will try that out when the car comes in. Being towed to my place this weekend. Thanks. and more questions in the future

Half-true. That guide is only going to help if he has a '90 harness; i.e., that connector on which to apply the fix is a '90 only item.

If it's got a '93 harness, then it likely has a '91+ coil and PTU. In that configuration, your 1990 tachometer will not work correctly (if at all) and the easy way around it would be to swap in a '91+ tachometer.

i do have a 90's harness from a while ago, but not sure if the coil pack is still there. would it be easier to swap the harness? what sensors would i need to change what has been changed or would it but just a plug in thing. How much of a difference in harness is the 90's from the 93's. Or the dash harness are also the same?

I swapped a full harness 91 into my 92 and had some problems, some things didnt match up, got a 92 and i was all set on the 1g, pita when i got a 91 thinking it was a 92 harness.

You can read about the engine wiring harness differences here: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-electrical-wiring/412841-1990-engine-control-wiring-harness.html.

The easy way around this depends on what you have. Determine what you have and we can go from there. But based on what you've told us, swapping the tachometer is infinitely easier than swapping harnesses.

Cool thanks. i will take some pictures and guess ill have to find a tacho. thats the 93 cluster i have to find right.

ok, well i got the car, did some trouble shooting, it had 550cc injectors, scanmaster, apexi afc neo contorller, and headers. Now the guy told me he already has the 93 tach cluster in the car and it still didn't work with the 93 coil pack. Couldn't trouble shoot the starter problem so i made a custom push start button. It is running really ruff(lean) with like 40 count knocks on my scanmaster. we changed out injectors for nonturbo 90 dsm injectors ( different in ccs?) changed fuel regulator, transistor, and ran a bit better but really lean still. Seems like it needs more air. Unplugged a vac line at the i/m and received more air, thus starting better and idle a bit better. My maf is also not working? it idles really ruff when i plug it in and when i unplugged it it idles better but higher rpm. My fan isn't coming on so the engine is getting really hot to overheat mode. going to change out the fan today.
