Hey so i blew my head gasket today just by being stupid. My timing wasnt set, running lean, getting knock at 5krpm, bad thermolstat so i was overheating, dont have a set boost. So I pushed it and Pop went the head gasket. My dsm has always been good to me, but i was bad to it.

I bought the full gasket kit off ebay for my other 2g gsx but didnt use the head gasket because I have heard some bad things about them. So i have an "ebay" AKA "Evergreen Automotive" headgasket and its somwhat tempting because i could be running tomarrow if i chose to. Even though I'm not going to use it. So my question.

How many DSMers are using the ebay headgaskets?
And how much are you guys pushing?

Well I will admit I actually bought this kit kit last year for my build, Was not planing on using the HG as I had a cometic HG sitting on a shelf in my shop. Well My cometic HG got a little tweaked. I had no choice well actually I could have waited for another one to be shipped but I was in a rush. I threw the evergreen composite HG on and I pushed it from 15-20lbs boost Untill I spun main bearing. Wich was about a month of driving.

seems like you've already made enough bad decisions.

The best decisions are readily available, you're looking for cheap and fast based on the first post.

Feel free to define "real" input, while you're at it. Make sure to specify what makes input "fake".

Why not get a Fel-Pro Perma-tq hg? $34.99 at advanced.

Ugh... I hate to admit it but I was really cheap when I first bought this car but I am running a "Nippon Racing" MLS head gasket.

When I took my motor apart the old motor surprisingly it already had an OEM MLS and I compared the two and they were identical. Apparently Nippon makes gaskets for all the big Japanese auto makers. Is it really the same as an OEM? I dont know but it was freaking identical down to every bent tab and all the black goo around the cylinders and oil passages.

Its held up to everything I threw at it so far. however I know looks can be deceiving and on my next build it will not be worth it to save the $70 on the most important gasket in the car.

Err, that isn't THE Perma-torque....about 200 bucks shy of it. ;)

Head Gaskets - Engine Components - DSM - Mitsubishi - Modern Automotive Performance

I'm sure it is a FelPro, though.
You guys are both right. :)
Felpro uses the term "Perma-torque" for their expensive MLS gasket and their inexpensive composite gasket.

Fun Fact: Most gasket manufacturers make products for both the OE and the aftermarket.

I forget who makes the OE Mistu MLS head gasket, but I have an aftermarket gasket from the same manufacturer and it's identical in every way to the Mitsu MLS. :thumb:

How much was this Evergreen gasket set, and how complete was it?
This was so long ago I don't even recall, but it was cheap....sub-$50 region if I recall.

I'm done buying those cheap eBay gasket sets- the valve cover gasket that comes in the set starts leaking before you make it to the first oil change. When you remove them with 3-5k on them, they're already hard as a brick.

I just went through two pages of 4G63 gasket sets on eBay, and I can't believe how cheap they are!

I've only ever used the Felpro/Sealed Power gasket set, which definitely isn't the cheapest: Sealed Power Z2601704 - Sealed Power Engine Gaskets & Seals - Overview - SummitRacing.com

It's very complete, but has room for improvement. The composite exhaust manifold gasket sucks ass, and there are no turbo gaskets (which is OK because most kits include cheap composite gaskets that I wouldn't use anyway), but the rest of the kit is top notch and appears to be a bit more complete than most of the eBay kits that I just looked at. And being that it's all Felpro gaskets, there's no guessing or gambling on quality and fit.

EDIT: I should have done a poduct review on it 2 weeks ago before I put my engine back together using this kit. I guess I'll have to save it for the next rebuild. ;)

Lando putting that smackdown LOL

Seriously a headgasket should never be bought on the cheap, that one area that has to be oem or another well known brand, #### the price.

I just picked up a complete FelPro composite set at my workplace for my buddy Jeff's car for $78. No valve seals, no turbo gaskets....just everything needed to remove the head and manifolds. Still a great deal considering the price of everything individually.

Believe it or not, I like the composite manifold gasket better than the two-layer stainless gaskets. On two different customer cars I absolutely could not get one of those stainless bastards to seal where the composite head gasket-looking exhaust manifold gaskets sealed perfectly.

Dave had the same problem with the manifold he was running before the ERL, and he's used the composite exhaust manifold gaskets ever since.

Do you remember the part number on that set? The 260-1704 definitely includes stem seals, as well as all block gaskets.

Man, you're the first person that I've heard likes those things. I've thrown away a dozen of them by now. LOL I should start saving them for you.

I've had excellent luck with the MLS gaskets, but I always resurface my manifold flange before running it too.

Im running a ebay HG. and i haven't had a problem with it, and i was having major detonation with cylinders 2,3 bc i had clogged injectors. got that fixed, and the HG is still running fine. although im only running 10psi too.

Installed one of the eBay Evergreen Automotive gaskets in a customer car a while ago because he was cheap....it blew between cylinders 2&3 on the way home from my shop.

You get what you pay for.

A few good question is if it was a cheap headgasket it must of been cheap head bolts too? Also were the surfaces shaved clean? How many headgaskets have you done that are still running today?

Sounds like your blaming the customer for materials but you maybe right.

when you spun the main bearing did you have any noticable damage to the head gasket. is that ebay head gasket a reliable choice for 16 psi

After I pulled the motor apart I did not see any noticable damage to the head gasket. There was no indication of any leaking of coolant or anything. It seemed to be in great shape. But the crank on the other hand wasnt haha.

I know what you're talking about. It's the nippon racing mls gasket on ebay. Here is one next to an OEM mls.
