Buschur Racing's new 1G DSM build!
First, I'm glad to say we are vendors here now and I'm looking forward to it. Now for what we are doing!
We are bringing back a 1G Project!! It's been many years since we built a 1g here. Last one was our Hugger Orange 1991 Talon. We ran a best with that of 9.90's with a VPC in it. This time the project was encouraged for a few reasons and by a few circumstances.
The last three years of the DSM/EVO Shootout have basically been dominated, in the Quick 16, by DSM's with automatic transmissions in them. At first I dismissed it as a fluke, had no interest in even looking into it. After three years of seeing them getting faster and running consistently I got more interested. I wanted to build a car we could actually race and go rounds with and an auto 1g seemed to fit the description. A few more reasons for the project. The 20th Annual DSM/EVO Shootout is coming up, damn, 20 years of Shootouts. Each one has grown and each one has gotten better. For 2012 the 20th Annual is a three day event, two full days of racing at the track. I wanted to bring back what I started with, a 1991 Eagle Talon AWD. This time it's going to be an automatic and a bit more race oriented than it was back in 1991 though! The last reason for this build is a short story.....Myself, Jarrod, Kevin and Dean Lawson all took a trip down to North Carolina this November for a race. It was the first race Kevin, Dean and myself had been together to in many-many years and the weekend reminded me of all the things I love about racing. Friendship, laughs, dinners, drinks, laughs, conversation, laughs and of course the racing although to be honest the racing is a small part of it. The three of raced together for quite a few years, Kevin drove our Conquest, the Hugger Orange 1G and my current RS, the times we had are not replaceable. So, that's the reason I am building this car.
Let me also add I owe some thanks to a few guys. Kevin at Kiggly Racing for a TON of tech on the automatic transmissions, Aaron at English Racing and Jeff Bush, both for answering questions for me to help this go a little easier.
Let me throw in a few details of what I plan to do and then I'll get to the pictures we've taken so far of the car and the build.
I am going to duplicate my RS build as far as the power plant goes. 2.3 6 bolt engine, 2g head, 2g intake, forward facing HTA86 turbo kit, BR COP ignition, BR Spec custom cams, BR Race FMIC, BR i/c pipes, BR alternator relocation kit, ECM Link, 2000 cc injectors and running on E98. So as close as I can get to my EVO is set up now. I'm doing this because I have so much time and development in that package I just think it's going to kick ass in this chassis.
Things we plan to develop: A Race FMIC with different routing than our current kit for the forward facing kit. Light weight center member and the front cross member under the radiator. Aluminum bolt in fuel cell that uses the new Walbro 400 LPH pumps, twin intake pumps. A bolt in 3000GT rear end kit. A bolt in parachute mounts. The car will have an NHRA Legal cage in it. Kirky race seat. Parachute. We will be running STM's new front brake kit along with stock rear brakes and some good Hawk pads. We will be offering built 1g automatic transmissions as I have one of the best guys in the business on the job. We will also be offering 1g torque converters I've got one of the top guys in the country on that job. I have to obviously run the stuff we are building first and prove it's as good as I am hoping it to be before we start selling it all.
I am building a race car, it will be gutted but will be what I'd picture my original 4Bangr to have morphed into by this time. So the interior will be gutted for the most part. Fiberglass, hinged hatch with Lexan window. The rest of the glass will remain stock with working door windows. The hood will also be fiberglass. The full dash will remain in the car but with just a few aftermarket gauges. We will also be offering nice aluminum door panels and some other nice aluminum panels for inside the car, like the large flat area next to the rear seats. The entire interior and cage will be painted along with the outside of the car.
Now my original 1991 Eagle Talon, as most of you know, now belongs to John Shepherd. It was Black Cherry when I sold it to him and I plan to bring this car back to look like that one. So it's going to be black cherry with a black top just like my original.
Sorry, getting long winded but I'm excited about the project! My 13 year old son Zachary is getting his first real automotive education on the car I bought. For the last week he has had the task of stripping the complete interior out of it and learning how nice dry ice makes getting sound deadening out of a car! He did a great job and has the car stripped down nicely now.
Without further delay, here are some shots of the car as it sits now:
CAR:
2 ENGINE SHOTS:
NO SUN ROOF:
NO WIPERS:
NO SEAT BELT MOUNTS:
FLOOR & SOUND DEADENER REMOVAL:
The car has been taken to Reese Chassis, the same company that built the tube chassis Talon for me and the Conquest. He will be building the cage, parachute and all the custom parts..
Thanks for reading!

Subscribed. If this is going to be a build though it should be moved into the build journals.
I ordered a Franks Custom Fiberglass hood about 2 weeks ago and he said he had 5 1g hoods on order before mine, he said one was for Buschur Racing... is that the hood for this project?

David, thank you for making a thread for your race car buildup! It will definitely be nice to see it at the 20th SO this year competing! I am thinking we are going to see a lot of 8.0-8.6-second cars there this year to compete against for top spots with the cutoff likely around 9.1-9.2 for quick 16. It will be a pleasure to race with you in a DSM!
I don't know if we have any "rivalry" stuff going on anymore since most the big dogs aren't racing PRO anymore (I know that there are a couple still of course), but it would be nice to put rivalries aside and actually race as a community without animosity.
I promise I will have a seat and full exhaust in my car this year also so I don't get kicked out of my class! !

I looked around at the options for where to post this and thought since it will be somewhat tech related as it proceeds it was an OK fit here. If the mods want to move it, I won't be offended.
We didn't remove the seam glue, just where your feet sit so it doesn't get sticky.
I can't really think of any rivalries either. The shootout is pretty free of "bad apples" now-a-days it seems and it's nothing but good times. Seems the problem children have closed up shops or moved on to other things.
Yes, one of the hoods and a hatch from Frank's are for this build. I am leaving the rest of the body stock and all the glass stock except for the rear hatch. We are going to install manual window regulators so we can keep the door glass functional. We will also be offering "bolt in" aluminum door panels and the rear side panels for the 1g's. Hopefully it will make for some nicer looking race cars by doing so. The door panels will have the hole for the window crank and factory door handle, no lock option, that will be deleted.
We've got a nice list of parts to do and some of the projects have been started already, I can't wait to get the car back here and get to building some of it on our own!
Thanks for the interest in the project!

NICE! Did I read right that you will be running a 2g intake manifold? Not the stock 2g right? Anyways looking forward to reading more.
Off to your site to find those Alm bolt in panels.

Wow, everyone is going auto once again. I think it's going to become rare to see 5spd cars is years to come. I think I'll continue saving for a real-dogbox. I was hoping you'd go 5 speed on this build Dave. Althought I'm happy you have a DSM in your stable again. GOOD LUCK with the build.

No way on the 5 speed for this build, doing a 5 speed build was of no interest! haha TOO many horrible memories! The auto is what made doing this so interesting.
Having a reliable 8 second DSM is what I am looking forward to, I just hope it happens.
I think we are going to put a complete new roof on the car. Elvin Rivera is painting the car for me when it's ready and he is going to start looking for a roof skin for it. At first I was going to bring the car back in Black Cherry, like the original, but the more I think about it I sure do love white. I think I'm going to paint it like the Eclipse, all white except for the top.
Nothing new on our site yet, the door panels and other parts are all in process of being built.

As with every car we ever built I will drive it for the first time and make sure it goes straight and is safe, then the plan is to put Kevin in it and I am going to continue racing the EVO. I enjoy watching the cars we build go down the track as much, hell probably more, than I enjoy being in them. My EVO is under the knife for this year and should be quicker/faster than ever and I'm going to pilot it. The EVO has one goal of 8.90's and to be able to autocross it too and keep driving it. The DSM has a starting goal of 8.90's and then we will see from there how fast we decide to try and go. Main thing is reliability.

I am glad to see the Buschurs make a return the 1g platform I can't wait to see what this car can do, it's sad that it will be an auto, but they have shown to be very durable, subscribed.

Awesome! I was hoping it would be just a matter of time before the auto craze would bring the top dogs back to the 1g! Not only is it going to be an epic project just for the new parts you are planning on developing, but now we get to see BR competing with the other big names in the auto division. Congratulations to you Dave and your team for being so involved in the aftermarket and event development for so many years, you guys have helped make it what it is today! Thank you.
This is shaping up already to be an exciting year to be a DSM owner/fan. The DSM Shootout is going to be the place to be this year, I better start making travel plans. I cant wait. Good luck!

I wish there was a "Like" button for this. Im stoked to see a company going back to what got them where they are today. It will look awesome in white but going back to the "4 banger" would be AWESOME!
I can't wait to see it at the track. I hope u pull through with the development of the parts like your talking about. The door panels would be nice as i have thought about doing this. I think you should make a "tube" front end for the car that would slip into and be welded or bolt into the frame rails just ahead of the engine and trans mounts. Affordability would be awesome too!
20th dsm shootout anniversary here we come! I've had plans to come before the 19th annual even started ;p

We never gave up on the DSM's. We actually built some parts in the last few years but the interest is low and I'd assume a lot of it is the cost. Like our Race FMIC kit, we sell that same core for the EVO and sell multiple units per week. The DSM it's a few a year. I can't compete with these $400 FMIC kits that other offer. I refuse to use anything but the best core I can find and quality 304 stainless for the tubing and it costs us a lot to produce a quality kit.
I do know what you mean though, after I sold my AWD the development to keep going faster kind of stopped and that was just enough development for 10.7's at 131.
We will see where this goes. Idea is to offer some hard core parts we never offered before and see what happens.
You know the truth of it all? I just want to go race with Kevin and Dean again, we had so many good times back in the day. If we can put this car together and run some consistent/reliable high 8's it's all I am looking for now. Get out and run some events here and there and have some good times, that's what this is really about.

I hear ya man and I was only being sarcastic. I mean, after all, you do host the DSM/EVO shootout every year. And I completely understand you're running a business and EVO parts is where it's at now. The china knock off crap and part counterfeiting going on out there really kills it too. Either way, I'm excited to see another up and coming automagic drag 1G.
