Ok, i bought my car wit the egt gauge already in place, before I really knew anything about engines etc. Its a 2 hour drive from where I bought the car to where Ilive and the EGTs were maxxed the whole way@ 1600 (maybe more, the needle was buried). Anyway, I talked to some guys, did some research etc and found out that 1600 is the "no zone". The guys I talked to said my gauge or probe must be wrecked..,,
whatever whatever. i got to looking at my probe (pre-turbo) and noticed that it was originally a straight probe, but was manually bent so as not to hit my fan blades. Anyway would bending the probe in such a way throw off my readings??? Also, after running any amount past 1600 I would begin to notice difference in the way it runs, would I not??

Could you clarify this or post a pic?

Its tapped into the exhaust manifold right under that Japanese symbol for "dont touch" (The hand with the x through it).

I am under the understanding that you can buy a straight probe *or* a probe with a factory-made bend in it to make it fit in places like mine, go around corners etc...depending on where you tap it. My probe was originally sraight when it came out of the box, but if the guys who originally put it bent it with a pair of pliers or something. If they did not bend it like that it would have been hitting my fan blades.

I would post a pic but I dont have a camera. Im goig to ma's house for mothers day and she has one. I'll post a pic later if you guys still want one.

Thanks fellas.

is the gauge a autometer gauge? because that looks just like a autometer probe, i have one. it looks like it is manually bent, but it isn't. i don't believe i have ever seen one tapped there. infact it doesn't even look tapped, because i can see the actual probe. take the heat shield off and take a picture or just check and see if it is even tapped into the manifold. the actual probe part that measures the heat isn't supposed to be sticking out at all, it should be all the way in the manifold. it's hard to explain, but i would re-tap it on the number one runner on the exhaust manifold(closest to the timing belt)

i never seen one tapped there either -- i imagin thats suposed to be in the collector - witch i would think would be cooler than the #1 runner. so 1600 would be hot as hell at cruise - normal , tapped in #1 would be 1450-1500 doing 80mph in the freeway

I don't know how anyone could actually do this by mistake, but it looks to me like the probe is tapped into the heat sheild and not even into the manifold at all. I'd take it out, take the heat sheild off and you may find there isn't even a hole drilled into the manifold. Just a thought.
