Mine's in the rear o2 spot. Works fine.

The reason it is recommended to be place 36" or further away is so you don't kill the sensor prematurely from the heat of the turbo. The sensor can be in the muffler and will read the same as if it was in the o2 housing as long as the exhaust doesn't have any leaks before the sensor. The further away it is though the longer it will take to read.

I've had my PLX Wideband in the car for 4 years now and it still reads perfectly fine. I have mine located in the downpipe, just after the first main bend that goes to the rear of the car.

What about egt gauges, are they good to have? Would they be any help to tune?

I think an egt gauge is a waste of money. By the time it shows that the egt is high enough to melt parts damage has already probably been done. Its like when the low ol pressure light comes on, something has most likely already went wrong with the car.

I have one that came with the car. I hooked it up mostly out of curiosity. I don't tune by it, but I glance occasionally to see what the temp is.

Not really. All you need is a WB. The egt just lets me see that my AFR is keeping the exhaust gas temps withing range. 1250-1350* while cruising on the highway and not over 1550* during a WOT pull. Nothing spectacular and its just one more thing to try and watch while driving which becomes a PITA in a hurry. I am more interested in rpms & WB and speedo (I guess). When my wife rides in the car I ask her to tell me what the other gauges are reading cause its just too much to keep up with.

do you scare you wife with your car? I remember mine with no boost control boost increasing to 35lbs + then POW! Hit fuel cut so bad the engine cut off. That was a year ago when I didnt even know what fuel cut was.

No. She loves it and has a cheese grin every time I hit full boost. She loves DSMs and one day I will build her a 2g. (she thinks it prettier than the 1g. )

lol. My car used to scare me all the time. It was slow as crap too. I had a broken injector seal, no boost control, yellow top injectors with out the dsmlink at the time, gas in the oil, and no oil cooler. It was also really loud because I just had the 3'' downpipe on it. I wished that is would be as fast for as loud as it sounded. I didnt even get to feel it run right before I took it all apart. shame. shame. waste of a jdm swap and 1650 dollars

I just got the innovate LC1 with a db gauge from ma performance. I was wondering how to read the gauge. When it read 13.4 that means 13.4 to one right. 13.4 being fuel and one is understood to be fuel right?

The 13.4 means 13.4:1, which is your air/fuel ratio. I'm assuming you meant to say 13.4 being air, not fuel.

That pigtail is for the GenII. I'm not familiar with that one so it may come with the pigtail if you were to buy it new. That just may be for someone who doesn't have one.
If you just get the basic vehicle specific translator, it comes ready to plug in and use. And if used in conjunction with DSMlink, doesn't require changing any settings.
Here's the MAF Translator website with the different versions they offer:

Ok after reading most of this thread, and my brain starting to hurt, I'm going to put this out there for you:
Here's what you should get:
1) DSMLink / Eprom ECU (which you said you have)
2) a QUALITY boost gauge (I assume you have)
3) a wideband (which you said you have)
4) MAFT / 3" LT1 GM MAS
The air meter from the LS1 works good to but it seems, in my experience anyway, that the LT1 air meter is a little bit more accurate, even though the guy at the Chevrolet dealership says there the same air meter, I disagree.
5) Coper heat shield if your putting your wideband o2 sensor in the o2 housing location
6) Build a boost leak tester and test often....

I just got a 3'' gm maf. and yes I have the dsmlink, lc1 wideband with db gauge. Your right I need to make a boost leak tester. I put the o2 bung after the flex pipe. The air meter you are talking about, that is a MAP sensor right?

The air meter is the little sensor inside the mesh on the GM MAF. I wasn't even aware there were different and/or more accurate ones.
90laserRSfwd - how do you know which air meter your MAF has?

Instead of plugs and pigtails. Will it work to just wire up a translators wires to the wires of the stock maf plug. That is if I had a 2g plug on the translator and a 1g maf plug, could I just cut the plugs off and wire it up?

how do you wire this 1g maf translator?
ok. the plugs have been cut, but I do have a plug for the 3'' maf sensor. I just need to wire up the stock maf wires.
