What Laptop Are You Running DSMlink on?? - Page 2

Hello,

I have the pocket verison of Dsmlink for my wm6 enabled cell phone. The program starts up fine but I am not sure how to get it connected. I was wondering if anybody knows what I would need. The phone only has one type of connection and thats mini usb... I have a mini usb cable that has usb male on the other end....

if i take a female/female gender changer on the end of the cell phone male end, then use a keyspan male usb to serial (and that to my dsmlink cable)... would it work?

i use an alienware laptop with a special usb converstion to hook up the dsmlink. but i take out that laptop everytime i leave or lock it in the trunk

Serial ports are important, using a serial to usb adapator is a pain.. I couldn't even connect using an adaptor with my AEM, i had to dig out the old laptop with a serial port, works excellent now.

If I use the same computer that I use for DSMLINK to get on the internet and store music or pictures will that be a problem? Am I better off just having a separate computer for DSMLINK?

Thanks.

That would work just fine. DSMlink won't screw anything up on the computer and doesn't take up much memory/hard drive space.

My main worry was how much space it takes up, thanks for the info guys. Also is it necessarily required to use a laptop? If I could I'd rather just use a desktop and keep it in the garage.

Did you seriously just ask that question?

A desktop would be ok if you just want to rev tune your car or do all your tuning at once after taking logs out on the road. Not sure how you expect to do 3rd gear pulls though and log them with a desktop. A laptop, palm, or smartphone are pretty much your only options.

I got a Dell Lattitude CPx for $200. I also bought an Airlink external wireless card for $30. The computer only has a 6gb hard drive.

The only problem with that is you might not be able to log as many items or capture as much data with a palm/smartphone as you would with a laptop. I'm not sure how well them work as I use a laptop and don't have a palm/smartphone yet.

Sorry, but I just had this vision of an Eclipse making a WOT 3rd gear pull down the expressway with a desktop PC strapped to the roof.

+1 for the Dells, i have an old IBM thinkpad that is from government use and it's sturdy as hell, i use it for tunging DSMlink and other DOS based ECU interfaces...When it comes to AEM's though i have to use a Dell inspirion because teh 233mhz thinkpad wqon't run the software fast enough for my tastes

I just got my hands on a "toughbook" from a cop car ( it's legal and NOT stolen BTW) and that thing is the shiznit... the guy who had it before me threw it at my frioend, he didn't catch it, it hit the ground and still works perfect... everything inside is wrapped in gel packs and connected by wires instead of cheap ribbon cable or just being soldered direct... if you can get a tough book you won't regret it...plus the touch screen rocks

I'm using an Acer Travelmate 8100; kinda overkill for DSMLink, but I got it practically for a song. I'm probably going to replace it with an Eee PC in the very near future because it's just too damn big to have inside the car; I'm sure going to miss that widescreen WXGA though.
