I have seen and been told to install the egt probe in the number 1 cylinder runner of the exhaust manifold. But in my instructions for the Autometer EGT gauge I bought says to install it after the turbo in the turbo's exhaust outlet tube(O2 housing)?
Anybody have any ideas on where the correct place will be to install it?

#1 cylinder runner of the exhaust manifold is correct. 4-5 inches from where the exhaust manifold mounts to the motor. You want to mount it at the point where it will pick up the hottest possible reading which has been found to be #1 runner on our motors.

Autometer install instructions are generic.

Number one gets the least amount of fuel and the most air so therefore runs the leanest. That is why you want to put the thermocouple there. Just a bit of theory behind the previous statement.

stevetford, what kind of intake manifold are you using? Any stock one or cyclone will yeild the hottest burn temperatures in cylinder #2. Id send the probe inbetween the head and the collector. If you have a sheetmetal intake, i would recommend sending the probe through the middle of the collector so that its sticking out in the direction of the radiator so you get an accurate avg cylinder temp. Most people do cyl #2 but id recommend it in the middle of the collector.
