I've been trying to mount an external oil cooler on my 91 TSi AWD, and of course one thing lead to another and my car has been in pieces for two weeks. Much longer than anticipated.

I ordered a external cooler/oil filter mount from MachV and I think they sent me the wrong one. It looks like the 7 bolt housing to me.

If you've done this mod on a early 1G, can you take a look at this picture and let me know if it is indeed the wrong one? Like to get to the bottom of this before I take more things apart to install this.

Thanks.

nobody knows eh? Well, here's the picture of the 7-bolt on Turbotrix.com... there are some differences between the two. Question is, is what I have just another version of the 7 bolt... It has a "F" casted into it rather than an "L" on the 7-bolt.

I thought ALL THESE with Oil Cooler Valves AND ports for the Air to Oil Cooler were 6 Bolt Oil Filter Housings because they ONLY came on 90's which were all 6 Bolt - Am I mistaken? It's certainly different than my 6 Bolt '91 that had a water cooler of course - But I if the mating side is the same it will work fine - it did come with a gasket of course ? The bolt bosses & therefore Bolt lengths look to be DIFFERENT than mine - That is the Oil Cooler Low Temp Valve at the bottom with the raised bump on the Nut & of course the Oil pressure relief valve at the rear Nut with no bump.

My 91 came with something similar (3 ports but in different places than that one) but it has no Oil Cooler Valve - I'm running an air to oil cooler without the oil cooler low temp valve - I cut the Oil filter bolt & Loctited it into the Housing & canned the water cooler.

Just for giggles what did your '91 have?

Both those pics are of 89-90 External oil cooler filter housings. Those 2 big holes with threads and where the banjo bolts for the external cooler feed in and out of. The 91-99's do not have those holes.

Actually my 91 Housing HAS those holes - including the plugged one - they are just in a different place - I do NOT have the Low Oil Temp Cooler Bypass Valve. The N/T's may not have those holes.

Well Sorry for bringing up this thread back from the dead but I thought it was better than starting a new one. When I got my JDM motor installed I have the same oil filter housing. But theres n o Oil pressure sending unit. I want to put my old one on this oil filter housing but where do I put it in at?

Find a 90 TSi, TSi AWD, GST, GSX, Laser Turbo in the yard and take the housing off. It will be cheaper and you will get the pressure relief system/oil pressure sender/dummy light sender and the stuff involved in it. Grab carb cleaner and clean everything out. Reinstall and you have a re-used, good oil filter housing.

But the oil filter housing I have already has the external oil cooler ports on it so there really isn't a need on getting another oil filter housing unless I'm missing the point. The problelm is it just doenst have the big oil pressure sending unit like my other one did but it looks exactly like the one on the beginning of the post but I still have the oil pressure sending unit from my old motor which I want to install but not sure what port to install it on.

don't know if this helps, but here's a pic of the one that I sold that came off of my jdm motor, with the oil pressure sending unit still on it.

Yeah thats the idiot light sensor. What I orginally did was I put a T type fitting where the idiot light is and I put in my sensors for the idiot light, the oil pressure and also for my aftermarket apexi oil pressure guage (which I bought becuase I didnt have the stock one workign at the time). But it just looks really ghetto and I dont like it at all and I was thinking maybe with all those fittings if it isnt reading to accurate and also its beggining to leak. So what I was thinking at first was the get the greddy oil filter block and that has ports on it for sensor. But then I saw that Ill be installing a 3inch downpipe and will probably have clearence issues with that unit also in it. SO I came to the conclusion that maybe I should get a oil filter relocation kit that has ports on it for sending units for my guages and then not have to worry about clearence issues and also the accuracy. Is this a good idea or no?

Does switching the housing require you to remove the timing belt cover, some people have mentioned it but no one has said its something they actually did.

Looking at the Pic above & looking at my Gallery Pic I say ONE OFH to Block Fastener is under the Plastic Timing Cover.
.

I've moved my filter twice now. Don't ask. It's easy to do with the kit from Perma-Cool. I relocated the filter into the drivers side fender well just under the washer bottle. Super easy to change the filter and I get to use a huge Ford 5.0 filter. Also put a nice Mocal oil cooler in the spot where the drivers side fog light used to be. Everything is plumbed with -8 fittings and looks really nice. Too bad no one can see it.

Yes you have to remove the timing cover to swap OFH.
